  • Tiller finished in the Top 10 of the Woodbine trainer standings once again in 2016, compiling a record of 31 wins from 229 starts.
  • River Maid recorded a pair of stakes wins for Tiller, which included victories in the Ballade Stakes and Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes. Other Tiller stakes winners in 2016 included Sweater Weather (Algoma S. & Classy ‘N Smart S.), Songs and Laughter (Bold Ruckus S.), and Dragon’s Cry (Bull Page S.)
  • 30 of Tiller’s 31 wins during the 2016 season came on the Woodbine main track

Career

  • Began conditioning career in 1972, winning 21 races that year, including his maiden-breaking tally with Royal Greek Ship
  • Early highlight came in 1975 when his first Queen’s Plate starter Near the High Sea finished second at 53-to-1
  • Since 1985, recorded at least 15 wins every season at Woodbine
  • Has four Woodbine training titles, capturing the 1994 (65 wins), 1997 (55 wins), 2001 (62 wins), 2003 (72 wins) meets
  • High-profile trainees include Domasca Dan (Bull Page, Queenston, Col. R.S. McLaughlin and the Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park) and Elated Guy (Bunty Lawless, Kingarvie, second in Molson Export Million)
  • In 1999, Tiller guided Talk Back to an undefeated local campaign, including a win in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, but fell short in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies…she finished three points behind the late Hello Seattle in Sovereign balloting
  • Output exploded in 2001, taking his earnings to the $3-million plateau (led all trainers) for the first time, a level at which he has remained ever since
  • Led Woodbine standings with 62 wins and 12 stakes wins and, as a result, honoured with his first Sovereign as outstanding conditioner…also picked up divisional championships with three-time stakes winner Rare Friends (top two-year-old male) and six-time stakes winner Win City (top three-year-old male and Horse of the Year)
  • Win City had a fabulous season, winning the Queenston, Marine, Plate Trial, Col. R.S. McLaughlin, the Autumn Stakes; the brilliant gelding’s lone blemish came when second in the Queen’s Plate, but atoned for the defeat by winning Tiller his first classic, taking the Prince of Wales Stakes
  • Tiller won 66 races in 2002

  • Matched previous season’s 15 stakes triumphs (37.5% win percentage), a total accomplished with four horses: Twisted Wit (Queenston and Achievement); Winter Garden (Hendrie and Sweet Briar Too); Brass in Pocket (Ballade, Seaway and Classy ‘N Smart) and Simply Lovely (Muskoka, Victorian Queen and Fanfreluche)…Simply Lovely won a Sovereign Award as Canada’s Champion Two-Year-Old Filly…Winter Garden and Brass in Pocket were second and third, respectively, in voting for Top Older Female…Winter Garden lost by just eight votes as the country’s Champion Sprinter
  • In 2005, Tiller finished in the top-two in the standings for the fifth straight season…21.2% wins…turned a turf stakes hat trick with Top Ten List (La Prevoyante, Ontario Damsel, Passing Mood)…other stakes winners included Are You Serious (Kennedy Road Stakes) and Dave the Knave
  • In 2007, Tiller posted a strong win rate in stakes (26%), winning a total of 10…recorded his 100th career stakes win in Shepperton on August 6 with Dave the Knave…also won Clarendon (Spread the News), Bold Venture (Are You Serious) and Kenora (Twisted Wit)…won three stakes with Midnight Shadow (Shady Well, Nandi, Victorian Queen)…won two stakes with Dancer’s Bajan (Frost King and Kingarvie)
  • In 2007, Tiller remained in top-five for 19th consecutive year…seventh straight season with at least 50 wins…won the Deputy Minister and Overskate with Dancer’s Bajan and the New Providence with Dave the Knave…second in total wins in maiden or claiming events  with 41…47 sprint scores, 6 wins in routes… has 113 stakes wins since 1975, including 10 graded victories
  • In 2008, Tiller was welcomed into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame…he won Steady Growth, Shepperton and Sir Barton with Dancer’s Bajan…won his 1500th career race with Diplomatic Impact…ranked 4th overall in top-3 finishes with 117…30 sprint scores, 9 route tallies; five two-year-old wins…Tiller slipped from top-5 for first time in 19 years…third in total wins since 2000, having recorded 558 victories (20.5% win rate), just 10 behind Reade Baker
  • Was known as a claiming trainer, but stock has been upgraded and barn is mostly comprised of stakes and allowance horses.
  • In 2009, Tiller returned to the top-5 after a one-year absence among the elite
  • His win total increased by 10 compared to 2008 and his earnings increased slightly

  • Competed in the first two legs of the Triple Crown with Oh Canada finishing 13th in the Queen’s Plate and 3rd in the Prince of Wales
  • Oh Canada was one of two stakes winners for Tiller taking the Woodstock while Grace Phil won the South Ocean
  • 37 of the stable’s 45 victories came in sprints
  • Rashnaa compiled a record of 2-3-3 in eight starts including a pair of third-place efforts in the Sweet Briar Too and Grade 3 Seaway Stakes
  • 44 of his 45 wins arrived in main track events
  • In 2012, Tiller won 448 races at Woodbine including stakes scores from Anywhere (Ballade), Grace Phil (Passing Mood), It’s Gail (Eternal Search and Nikkis Bold Gelato (La Prevoyante)
  • Tiller won five stakes with separate runners in 2013 including victories by Langstaff (Bold Ruckus), Laughin Falcon (Passing Mood), Jade Dragon (Deputy Minister), Nikkis Smartypants (G3 Royal North) and Spadina Road (Kingarvie)
  • With 62 wins,Tiller finished second in the trainer standings behind Mark Casse
  • In 2014 Tiller notched 50 wins in 2014 securing third position in the trainer standings
  • The veteran conditioner scored six added-money wins led by Sweater Weather who captured the Eternal Search and La Lorgnette. His other stakes winners included Spadina Road (Deputy Minister), Eff Bee Eye (Nandi), Goodoldhockeygame (Bull Page) and Pohdi Pohdi (Victoria Queen)
  • A remarkable 44 of Tiller’s 50 wins came in sprint races
