{"id":3349,"date":"2020-07-22T17:12:06","date_gmt":"2020-07-22T21:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodbine.com\/queensplate\/seven-ready-to-test-marine-waters-seven-also-set-for-selene\/"},"modified":"2020-07-22T17:12:06","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T21:12:06","slug":"seven-ready-to-test-marine-waters-seven-also-set-for-selene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/2020\/07\/22\/seven-ready-to-test-marine-waters-seven-also-set-for-selene\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven ready to test Marine waters \/ Seven also set for Selene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO, July 22, 2020 \u2013 A pair of Grade 3 events, the $125,000 Marine Stakes and $125,000 Selene Stakes, share the spotlight this Saturday at Woodbine.<\/p>\n<p>A key prep on the road to this year\u2019s Queen\u2019s Plate (September 12, at Woodbine), the 1 1\/16-mile main track Marine, for three-year-olds, has attracted some noteworthy Canadian-breds hoping for a spot in the Plate starting gate.<\/p>\n<p>Queen\u2019s Plate eligibles Dotted Line (18-1 in the Queen\u2019s Plate <a href=\"https:\/\/woodbine.com\/woodbine-news\/malibu-mambo-tops-2020-queens-plate-winterbook\/\">Winterbook<\/a>), Glorious Tribute (40-1), and Perfect Revenge (40-1) are set to contest to the Marine.<\/p>\n<p>The 65th running of the Marine will be complemented by the 67th edition of the Selene, a 1 1\/16-mile race over the Tapeta for three-year-old fillies, an important fixture ahead of the Woodbine Oaks presented by Budweiser, on August 15.<\/p>\n<p>Merveilleux (25-1 in the Queen\u2019s Plate Winterbook) and Owlette (30-1) are among the Selene notables.<\/p>\n<p>John Oxley\u2019s homebred Lucky Curlin chases his second straight win, this time in the Marine, after a sharp score on June 14 at Woodbine.<\/p>\n<p>The Mark Casse trainee, in his ninth career start and first test on the Toronto oval Tapeta, rallied from fifth at the stretch call of the seven-furlong race to win by a length under Kazushi Kimura.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second win for Kentucky-bred chestnut son of Curlin, who broke his maiden last December at Fair Grounds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3351\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3351\" src=\"https:\/\/woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/LuckyCurlin-061420-MichaelBurnsPhoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/LuckyCurlin-061420-MichaelBurnsPhoto.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/LuckyCurlin-061420-MichaelBurnsPhoto-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/LuckyCurlin-061420-MichaelBurnsPhoto-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/LuckyCurlin-061420-MichaelBurnsPhoto-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Lucky Curlin and jockey Kazushi Kimura winning on June 14 at Woodbine Racetrack. (Michael Burns Photos)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The well-traveled colt, who has raced at Churchill Downs, Saratoga, Keeneland, and Fair Grounds, appears to feel right at home on the Woodbine Tapeta.<\/p>\n<p>Casse hopes the trend continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a horse that\u2019s disappointed me, to be honest. We were always thinking, \u2018If he ever gets his act together\u2026\u2019 He was a horse early on that we thought was as good as Enforceable. And of course, Enforceable is going to the Kentucky Derby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis last race, from a Beyer standpoint, was very good. I wasn\u2019t surprised, but it was pleasant. He\u2019s been extremely frustrating for us because we\u2019ve had high hopes for him. There are horses whose abilities are limited. He hasn\u2019t been that way. So, we\u2019ll see how he handles two turns. I\u2019m still not positive that he isn\u2019t a come-from-behind sprinter. But we\u2019re going to give it a try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Casse\u2019s other Marine starter is Untitled, a Florida-bred son of Khozan, owned by Gary Barber and Michael Sebastian.<\/p>\n<p>The bay colt is 2-3-0 in seven starts.<\/p>\n<p>In his first Woodbine appearance, on June 13, Untitled was second to Newstome in the Woodstock Stakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s kind of a mystery horse,\u201d offered Casse, who won the 2017 Marine with Souper Tapit. \u201cHe won very impressively first time out and he\u2019s run some good races. I think watching him run\u2026 we didn\u2019t have the luxury of getting a breeze over the track before his last start. He got up there and we ran him. I didn\u2019t think he cared for it that much. In fact, I was thinking about running him on the grass, but there really wasn\u2019t a grass race for him. He trained so well afterwards on the synthetic, so we thought we\u2019d give him a try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Marine contenders include trainer Barb Minshall\u2019s improving Glorious Tribute.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario-bred son of Congrats has one win and a pair of thirds from seven starts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis last race as a two-year-old [a maiden-breaking win at one mile and 70 yards on the Woodbine main track], he got a good trip and we got to stretch him out,\u201d said Minshall. \u201cI thought he ran really well. I took him down south all winter so I knew he was good and fit. I ran him once, on the turf, but the race was just a little too tough at that given time for him. (Michael Burns Photo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Minshall, Canada\u2019s champion trainer in 1996, remains a big fan of the dark bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to make sure he was good and fit because I really had a good feeling that he would get a mile and a quarter [Queen\u2019s Plate distance]. He\u2019s got a nice stride and a good mind. He\u2019s a very laid-back horse. I\u2019m pretty happy where he is right now. He\u2019s a big, sound horse, so I figured let\u2019s get him in, see how he is, get another race, and hopefully from that step go on to the Plate Trial [August 15] and hopefully we end at the Queen\u2019s Plate, and we\u2019ve got a bit of a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam-Son Farm has the most Marine wins (six) for owners, while Sandy Hawley holds the riding record with five Marine crowns. The most recent horse to notch the Marine-Plate double was Shaman Ghost, who achieved the feat in 2015. Last year\u2019s winner, Global Access, went on to earn year-end divisional honours at the Sovereign Awards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">***<\/p>\n<p>Ten Broeck Farm\u2019s Owlette, a bay daughter of Frac Daddy, goes after her fourth Woodbine stakes crown in the Selene.<\/p>\n<p>The Wesley Ward trainee took last year\u2019s Shady Well and Victorian Queen, and then added another stakes title to her record with a win in this year\u2019s Star Shoot on June 13.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19016\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19016\" src=\"https:\/\/woodbine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Owlette-StarShoot-MichaelBurnsPhoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Owlette and jockey Jerome Lermyte winning the Star Shoot Stakes on June 13 at Woodbine Racetrack. (Michael Burns Photo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Merveilleux, owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling, seeks her first added-money win in what will be her seventh start.<\/p>\n<p>The daughter of Paynter lost by a neck to Cool Shadows in last year\u2019s Princess Elizabeth and by a head to Curlin\u2019s Voyage in the Ontario Lassie.<\/p>\n<p>Owlette and Merveilleux will be tested by five other rivals, including the Casse trio of American Tap, Diamond Sparkles, and Two Sixty.<\/p>\n<p>A Florida-bred daughter of Uncaptured, Two Sixty, owned by Gary Barber, finished fourth in the Star Shoot Stakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s another one since that race who trained much better after being there for a little while,\u201d noted Casse.<\/p>\n<p>Diamond Sparkles, a Kentucky-bred daughter of War Front, made her North American debut in last year\u2019s Grade 1 Natalma Stakes, finishing fourth to Abscond.<\/p>\n<p>The bay\u2019s most recent race, seven furlongs on the Woodbine main track on June 13, yielded a second-place finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came over from Europe, ran pretty good in the Natalma, and then struggled a little bit through the winter,\u201d said Casse, of the filly owned by Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. \u201cI thought her last race was good and she\u2019s training well. We\u2019re going to give her a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>American Tap, bred by Tall Oaks Farm, is also owned by Barber.<\/p>\n<p>Casse and Barber teamed to take the past two runnings of the Selene. Miss Mo Mentum won in 2018, while Power Gal was victorious last year.<\/p>\n<p>A victory by any Casse starter would tie him with Yonnie Starr for the most Selene wins by a trainer, with six.<\/p>\n<p>The Marine is Race 3 on Saturday\u2019s 10-race card and the Selene is scheduled as Race 8.
