Each year, Woodbine Entertainment is pleased to recognize achievements of excellence by charitable and community organizations during our week-long celebration. Woodbine Cares Week celebrates the many valuable community organizations and causes that Woodbine Entertainment supports, which contribute so much to the life, health and vibrancy of our neighbourhoods.
2018 WOODBINE CARES CHARITY CHALLENGE WINNERS
Charity Challenge Winner:
Community Association for Riders with Disabilities
Congratulations to the Community Association for Riders with Disabilities (C.A.R.D.) on winning one of two $5,000.00 donations for the Woodbine Cares Week Charity Challenge.
Using the horse as therapy, C.A.R.D. changes the lives of children and adults with disabilities every day. C.A.R.D.’s therapeutic horseback riding program benefits riders who seek physical or cognitive therapies, who have a variety of disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. Therapeutic riding improves sensory processing, focus and concentration, the ability to learn concepts, and communication skills.

Horizons for Youth
Congratulations to Horizons for Youth on winning one of two $5,000.00 donations for the Woodbine Cares Week Charity Challenge.
Horizons for Youth is a shelter for at-risk and homeless youth in Toronto. The programs offered by Horizons for Youth include Mental Health & Addictions services, Housing Support, an engaging Day Program and Community Support & Aftercare. These holistic programs help residents leave the streets behind.

Albion Neighbourhood Services
Albion Neighbourhood Services (ANS) works in partnership with the community to enhance peoples’ lives through the delivery of programs, such as The Boys & Girls Club which strives to nurture confidence in children and youth (age 6-21), provide opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills, participate in civil society and empower individuals to support and influence their community. WEG has been a proud supporter of the Albion Neighbourhood Services Boys & Girls Club Summer Camp since 2011.

Community Association for Riders with Disabilities (CARD)
Incorporated in 1969, CARD provides therapy in the fields of cognitive therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation, medicine and adapted sport. CARD’s therapeutic horseback riding program benefits riders who seek physical or cognitive therapies, and who may have a variety of disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Though this longstanding partnership, Woodbine Entertainment has supported CARD in many ways. This year Woodbine supported CARD’s “Mini Royal” a horse show open to all CARD riders.

Girls Inc. Halton
Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy. In partnership with Girls Inc. centres, they focus on the development of the whole girl. She learns to value herself, take risks, and discover and develop her inherent strengths. The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationship, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated and independent.

LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society
LongRun fosters, rehabilitates and finds loving adoptive homes and alternative careers for thoroughbreds as event or pleasure horses and companion animals. The Society also endeavours to educate the Ontario thoroughbred racing community, as well as the public, about these alternatives. Woodbine Entertainment has a longstanding partnership with LongRun where a mandatory contribution for retired race horses is funded through purse accounts.

Standardbred Chaplaincy of Canada
A certified Canadian non-profit charity dedicated to providing, with excellence, for the spiritual, emotional, physical, and social needs of horse racing’s workforce. Through our Standardbred Racing product, the “Stable that God Loves”, a major fundraising program for the SRTCC has brought together owners for the racing season through an initiative that asks participants to donate a small percentage of the purse earning of one (or two) of their horses to the Chaplaincy on a continuing basis through the racing season.
Racetrack Chaplaincy of Canada (RTCC)
The RTCC strives to address the many needs of the thoroughbred racing community, both spiritually and practically, by providing support, aid, guidance and even just a friendly ear to listen. Through initiatives like educational programs and holiday celebrations, RTCC is building a sense of community that can grow and flourish. Woodbine Racetrack hosts the Jake Howard Centre which is the home of the Chaplaincy on Woodbine’s backstretch. The Jake houses a learning center, library, offices, and a clothing depot and is used by a number of backstretch workers. Woodbine Entertainment is proud to have a community hub such as this to support those who are dedicated to the industry.

Trust15
Trust 15 is a not-for-profit organization that provides inner city youth in the Rexdale/North Etobicoke area with programs that promote and facilitate positive behaviour, creative expression, and cooperative working skills. Trust 15 offers ‘at risk’ kids in their community the social and educational tools necessary to succeed in society by way of mentoring and positive role model intervention. Woodbine Entertainment is proud of the growth that Trust15 has seen in the past year. Woodbine employee volunteers act as mentors & coaches for the youth.

Conservation Halton Foundation
Conservation Halton works to protect, restore and manage natural resources in your watershed from lake to escarpment. Their vision is to sustain a healthy watershed with clean streams, vigorous forests, abundant green space and balanced growth that results in strong livable communities. Woodbine Entertainment’s contribution to the Conservation Halton Foundation has helped purchase and permanently conserve 25 acres of natural land in north Burlington that provides habitat for many species and links to the Bruce Trail, build the new Deer Clan longhouse at Crawford Lake Conservation Area, support the Halton Conservation Stewardship Program, and teach over 5,000 Halton-area students about the importance of forests and waterways in the community.

Halton Learning Foundation
The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) helps eliminate financial barriers to education for students of the Halton District School Board, ensuring all kids have equal opportunities to fit in and be successful in school. Students facing emergency or extraordinary financial challenges can receive immediate financial support for clothing, shoes, lunches, school supplies or learning opportunities such as field trips and co-op placements. Halton Women’s Place
Halton Women’s Place is an organization providing shelter and crisis services for physically, emotionally, financially and sexually abused women and their dependent children and is dedicated to ending violence against women and their children. Woodbine Entertainment’s long-term relationship with Halton Women’s Place began in 2000 with the support of the shelter’s Safe Shelter Program.

Horizons For Youth
Horizons for Youth, located in a high-priority neighbourhood near Caledonia & Eglinton, shelters more than 600 youth each year. Established in 1990, their mission is “To shelter, prepare and guide homeless and at-risk youth to achieve wellness and become contributing community members.” Woodbine Entertainment has assisted Horizons for Youth by providing meals created in-house by Woodbine chefs since 2009.

Rethink Breast Cancer
Rethink Breast Cancer reaches out to young people concerned about and affected by breast cancer, fostering a new generation of young and influential breast cancer supporters and responding to the unique needs of young women. By taking a breakthrough approach to education, support, advocacy and fundraising, Rethink Breast Cancer is thinking differently about how to beat breast cancer. Rethink is the inaugural charitable partner for the Queen’s Plate where one dollar from every ticket sold is donated back to Rethink.

Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society
The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society assists in the adoption and relocation of retired and non-racing Standardbred horses within Ontario by providing programming that educates and assists in the retraining and management of horses and facilitates long-term, mutually-beneficial placements. Woodbine Entertainment has a longstanding partnership with OSAS where a mandatory contribution for retired race horses is funded through purse accounts.
