CAMPBELLVILLE, July 27 – The duo of Trevor Henry and Dr. Ian Moore clicked with rookie pacing filly Jan in Thursday’s opening leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Series at Mohawk Racetrack.
A compact group of six two-year-old pacing fillies battled for a purse of $14,000 in the opening round of the three-week series.
Rock N Roll Heaven filly Jan was used a few times during the mile, but delivered a top notch effort to break her maiden in 1:53.3.
Henry pointed Jan to the lead and the Moore trainee shot to the front to post an opening-quarter of :28.1. The second-quarter saw plenty of movement, as Jan would be shuffled back to third, while Lady Grande, the 3/5 favourite, became the third-leader of the race and reached the half in :57.4.
Henry didn’t sit third for long and had Jan moving just before the half and back on top entering the far turn. The Moore trainee reached the three-quarter pole in 1:26 and then paced home in :27.3 to win by almost two-lengths over Lady Grande.
Nurse Pie Q finished third, while Save Your Breathe was fourth.
Jan came into Thursday’s start off a pair of top-three finishes against older rivals to start her career. She now has $12,180 banked in three starts for owners Wilma and James MacKenzie.
The daughter of Rock N Roll Heaven was a $35,000 yearling purchase at last November’s Harrisburg Sale.
Jan paid $4.90 to win.
The second leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Series will take place next Thursday (August 3).
Live racing continues Friday night at Mohawk Racetrack. Post time is 7:30 p.m.
