TORONTO, January 17 – This weekly feature offers a look back at the best Standardbred races and performances of the week at Woodbine.

AHEAD OF HIS COMPETITORS

#5 – Saturday, January 14; Race 8 – From post seven, Charlie Is A Joker extended his win streak to nine by using his noggin and fancy feet to find the winner’s circle.  The four-year-old gelding was triumphant with Sylvain Filion in the sulky.  The hard closing second choice won by a head in 1:55.3 for conditioner Per Henriksen. It was also close for third-place. Charlie Is A Joker paid $5.50 to win.

‘BLAZING’ A TRAIL 

#4 – Friday, January 13; Race 1 – The Mike Weller-trained Blazing Sakra poked his nose in front at the wire to win his conditioned claiming event.  The odds on favourite, who was driven to victory by Rick Zeron, used a :28.1 final quarter cross the finish line first in 1:54.4.  The six-year-old gelding paid $3.60 to win.

HE’S SHARP

#3 – Monday, January 16; Race 5 – From post eight, Blade Runner rallied from the back of the pack to capture his conditioned event by a slim margin.  The Richard Moreau trainee also took a new lifetime mark, stopping the teletimer in 1:52.1 with Sylvain Filion at the helm. The five-year-old gelding paid $8.20 to win as the second choice.

A TOP-SHELF EFFORT

#2 – Saturday, January 14; Race 13 – Topcornerterror converted off a perfect pocket trip to triumph by a nose in his overnight dash for trainer Des Tackoor.  Driven by veteran reinsman Mike Saftic, the six-year-old gelding, who was a 6-1 upsetter, got under the wire in 1:54.1. Topcornerterror paid $14.80 to win.

A ‘LIFETIME DREAM’ FOR ‘MISTY’

#1 – Saturday, January 14; Race 5; Lifetime Dream Trotting Series – In a 25-1 shocker, Runaway Misty won her $35,000 division of the second leg of the Lifetime Dream Series. The Gordon Henry pupil scored by a nose with driver Chris Christoforou in the bike.  The four-year-old mare equalled her lifetime mark with a 1:56.4 mile. Runaway Misty paid $52.50 to win.
