TORONTO, September 11 – The annual Woodbine ‘Turf Races’ event provided a well-meant victory for the 2011 United Way Campaign as employees of Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) and community sponsors raised a record $75,000 on the four-race card.
Over the years, this unique fundraising event which sees WEG employees compete against others over Woodbine’s world-renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course, has grown in size and popularity. An event that was once an in-house fundraiser has grown considerably. This year it attracted runners from Direct Energy, CTHS and United Way member agencies and business partners.
"We’re thrilled with the event and absolutely blown away with the generosity," said Carly Ainlay, United Way’s Resource Development Manager. "It’s a great example of what you can accomplish when people come together in support of a great cause. We really appreciate the partnership we have with Woodbine and the commitment that Woodbine has made to the community through their work with United Way."
The event, held on a gorgeous sunny morning at Woodbine Racetrack, included breakfast and other offerings for Woodbine employees and their families. The card, which included three relays and a spectacular mile and a half finale, was hosted by Canadian riding legend Sandy Hawley and television commentator Jeff Bratt.
Ainlay was thrilled with the turnout and showing of support by WEG employees.
"It was nice that the employees came out and brought their families and friends and participated today to help raise money and awareness for the United Way," she said. "We know this will go to great use in the community because we know how great the need is."
