MILTON, March 12, 2024 – Woodbine Entertainment today announced 67 three-year-old pacers have been nominated to this year’s $1 million North America Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park. This year’s North America Cup, scheduled for Saturday, June 15, will be the 41st edition of Canada’s most prestigious harness race. A total of 67 sophomore pacers have been nominated to this year’s event. That number is down from the 13-year high of 86 nominees last year and up from 61 nominees in 2022. Local stars Legendary Hanover and Captains Quarters are two of the headliners from the nominations. Legendary Hanover narrowly defeated Captains Quarters in O’Brien Award voting for 2023 Two-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the Year. Legendary Hanover won six of nine starts last season, including victories in the Champlain, Nassagaweya and Dream Maker. Captains Quarters made just five starts, finishing top-three in all and posting two wins, including defeating his rival ‘Legendary’ in the rich $970,000 Metro Pace. (New Image Media) Another standout nominee is Dan Patch Award winner Captain Albano, who won seven of nine starts, including the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes Championship. His season was capped off by a runner-up finish in the Breeders Crown to Gem Quality, who is also nominated to the Cup. The list of Cup nominees also includes Storm Shadow (Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final winner), Captain Luke (Governor’s Cup winner), Better Is Nice (Kentucky Sires Stakes champion) and Clever Cody (Ohio Sires Stakes champion). The first sustaining payment for this year’s North America Cup is due this Friday (March 15). Additional sustaining payments will follow on April 15 and May 15.
