Canadians shine on Hambo Day

August 9, 2015

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – August 9 – Another Hambletonian Day is complete and once again Canadians made their presence felt in the Garden State.

Pinkman’s World Record victory in the $1 million Hambletonian Saturday provided owners John & Jim Fielding of Toronto with their first victory in trotting’s greatest race. Herb Liverman, a native of Montreal, also co-owns the son of Explosive Matter. Pinkman Final.jpg(Photo: Pinkman winning the 1st Heat of the Hambletonian.)

Hambletonian day was going strong for the Fielding’s and Liverman before the big race was contested, as the trio’s filly Wild Honey, also trained by Takter, won the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks.

The stacked Hambletonian undercard saw a pair of locally trained horses score victories.

Dr. Ian Moore trainee State Treasurer set a World Record of 1:47 with a huge effort in the $215,400 U.S. Pacing Championship. The six-year-old pushes his career earnings over $1.4 million with the victory. State Treasurer is owned by Sally MacDonald of Souris, Prince Edward Island and Paul McDonald of Toronto, Ontario.

The Canadian success continued just a race later, as Flanagan Memory defeated a talented international field of older trotters in the $301,500 John Cashman Memorial.

Rene Dion of Saint-Lazare, Quebec trains and co-owns Flanagan Memory with Liette Flanagan of Repentigny, Quebec. The five-year-old trotter won the mile and eighth Cashman Memorial in 2:05.4 and increased his earnings to $818,000.

Many of the stars of Hambletonian Day are expected to make visits to Mohawk in the near future, as the major stakes season ramps up at the Campbellville oval.

Pinkman has an opportunity to become the third trotter in the last four years to win both the Hambletonian and Canadian Trotting Classic. The Trotting Classic will take place on September 19 along with the Maple Leaf Trot (Flanagan Memory is eligible) and the Elegantimage Stakes (Wild Honey is eligible).

State Treasurer is also likely to defend his Canadian Pacing Derby crown on September 5 at Mohawk.
