Jackpot Hi-5 Preview: Monday, February 2

February 2, 2015

TORONTO, February 2 – The Standardbred Jackpot Hi-5 carryover continues to grow and currently sits at $236,662.59 heading into Monday night’s card.

The Jackpot Hi-5 wager is offered on the final race every evening and requires the bettor to select the top five finishers in order.

If there are multiple winning tickets, 50% of that evening’s pool is carried over to the following card. If there is only one winning ticket, that bettor takes home the entire ‘Jackpot’.

Here is a preview of Monday’s Jackpot Hi-5 (Race 10) by Mark McKelvie.

Race Number: 10

Gait: Pace

Conditions: Non-Winners of $2,000 Last 5 Starts or Non-Winners of $5,000 Last 10 Starts.

Field Size: 10

Tonight’s Jackpot Hi-5 race appears to be a wide-open affair, but you may not have to go too deep when picking out your horses for your ticket.

I think there are two main threats for the top spot.

#5 Cobble Beach (4/1) – Dropped down to this level last week and finished fourth as the favourite. Many expected him to be better in that start and I think he’s worth another shot tonight. He is more than capable of winning at this level and has a nice spot to start from.

#7 Winning Dream (3/1) – Is dropping in class tonight and hasn’t been able to get the job done yet in three starts from the Auciello barn. It is likely just a matter of time before this seven-year-old finds his best stride and tonight looks like the spot.

While I think these two are the most likely to come away with the victory, I think there are two wildcards. Both these horses have upset potential and should be in the mix.

#6 Fresh Dream (12/1) – Is making his second start from the red-hot Dowling barn, but disappointed in his debut last week finishing seventh. However, he was filled with pace late and had nowhere to go. I expect Allard will make sure he’s got a shot tonight and he could offer a good price.

#10 Broadies Song (8/1) – Made his WEG debut last week and finished third off a two-hole trip. This was his first start in a few weeks and he should be a little better tonight. The ten-hole hurts, but he may be poised to strike late.

I think these four horses deserve a spot on your Jackpot Hi-5 ticket, but you need to figure out how to round out your ticket. Here are a couple options.

#4 Blissfull Years (12/1) – Finished fourth by only a neck in his most recent start and has been good in three starts for the Byron stable.

#9 Savannah Splendor (9/2) – Was set up for a better finish last time out, but finished seventh. He was only beat less than three-lengths and while I don’t see him upsetting, he is more than capable of earning a cheque.

The other four horses in the race aren’t write-offs to get up for fifth, but I don’t think you need to go too deep in the top three or four spots of your ticket.

Good luck with how you map out your Jackpot Hi-5 ticket.
