TORONTO, October 11 – This weekly feature offers a look back at the best Standardbred races and performances of the week at Woodbine.

VAL AMERICA SOARS

#5 – Saturday, October 8; Race 5 – The Jack Moiseyev-driven Val America lit up the toteboard when he won a conditioned event at odds of 24-1. Owned and trained by Stephane Larocque, the seven-year-old gelding rallied from off-the-pace to score the half a length triumph in 1:51.4. The bay paid $51.70 to win.

A MAGICAL TROTTER

#4 – Friday, October 7; Race 1; Ontario Sires Stakes Gold elim – Prestidigitator captured the second OSS Gold elimination for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings as the 6-5 favourite. The Dustin Jones pupil won by four lengths in a career-best clocking of 1:57 with Sylvain Filion in the bike.

THE WINNING ‘GAME PLAN’

#3 – Friday, October 7; Race 1; Ontario Sires Stakes Gold elim – The Game Plan romped in the OSS Gold elimination for freshman trotting colts and geldings as the 1-5 favourite. The John Kopas student was guided to victory by his regular pilot, Jack Moiseyev.  The colt won by three and three quarter lengths in 1:55.4.

FASTEST BY FAR

#2 – Friday, October 7; Race 5; Ontario Sires Stakes Gold elim – In the lone OSS Gold elimination for two-year-old pacing fillies, Apogee Hanover matched the all-time OSS record for two-year-old pacing fillies on a seven-eighths mile oval. With driver Scott Zeron at the helm, the Erv Miller trainee stopped the teletimer in 1:52. Click here to read more.

A SUB 1:50 MILE

#1 – Monday, October 10; Race 2; Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final – Warrawee Needy established a new stakes record when he captured his third Gold Final trophy. With driver Jody Jamieson in the sulky, the Carl Jamieson trainee used a quick :26.4 final panel to get under the wire in a scorching 1:49.4 clocking. The colt’s new lifetime mark lowered the all-time OSS record for two-year-old pacing colts on a seven-eighths mile oval. Click here to read more.
