CAMPBELLVILLE, September 28 – This weekly feature offers a look back at the best Standardbred races and performances of the week at Mohawk.

THE ‘HERO’ IS REBORN

#5 – Saturday, September 24; Race 3; Open Pace – Driver Jody Jamieson and St Elmo Hero converted off a pocket trip to capture the $50,000 Open Pace for trainer Meg Crone. The five-year-old gelding used a :26.2 final quarter to get under the wire in 1:49.2. St Elmo Hero paid $7.20 to win as the second choice.

THE MCNAIRS HAVE A ‘SECRET’

#4 – Friday, September 23; Race 5; OSS Grassroots Semi-final – The Gregg McNair-trained and Doug McNair-driven Secretsoftheknight lowered his lifetime mark to 1:53.3 in his Grassroots Semi-Final for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. The bay won in gate-to-wire fashion by one and a half lengths at 9-1. Life Sign rounded out the exactor at 36-1. Secretsoftheknight paid $20.40 to win and the $2 exactor paid $498.80.

SOME SEMI-FINAL ‘LUCK’

#3 – Friday, September 23; Race 7; OSS Grassroots Semi-final – Driver Paul MacDonell and Lyons Luck rallied from the back of the pack to capture the $30,000 Grassroots Semi-Final for two-year-old pacing fillies. The James Morrison trainee won by two and a half lengths as a 15-1 longshot. The pair stopped the teletimer in 1:57.1. Lyons Luck paid $32.80 to win.

A ‘HAPPY’ NIGHT

#2 – Saturday, September 24; Race 6; Milton Final – Laughandbehappy used a scorching :25.4 final quarter to win the $400,000 Milton Stakes final for fillies and mares. The Tony O’Sullivan pupil won by half a length in 1:50.2 with driver Jody Jamieson in the bike. The five-year-old mare paid $8.40 to win as the second choice. Click here to read more.

A $100 MILLION MOMENT

#1 – Thursday, September 22; Race 9; Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final – Driver Randy Waples guided China Pearls to victory in the $170,000 OSS Gold Final for three-year-old pacing fillies. Waples surpassed $100 million in lifetime earnings with the triumph.  The Carmen Hie student was the post time favourite when she scored the win by two lengths in 1:54.3. Click here to read more.
