King James holds court

Champion reinsman James MacDonald had a handful of reasons to celebrate his Saturday night at Mohawk, winning five consecutive races.

The multiple O-Brien Award-winning driver got the party started with a 2 ¼-length victory courtesy of Better B Going in the second and capped it off with a two-length tally from Seriously Hanover in the sixth.

MacDonald’s quintet of winners came for trainers Paul Court, Dave Menary, Dominic Gladu, Chantal Mitchell, and Garry Merner.

The surge helped elevate MacDonald’s season win total to a track-best 63 scores.

Menary sets the pace

Its Saturday Night and Brue Hanover teamed up to secure the exacta for trainer Dave Menary in Saturday’s $40,000 Open Pace.

The former, who’s enjoyed a stellar start to the season with four wins, two seconds and a third across eight starts ($108,000), edged his stablemate by a nose to book his second straight visit to the winner’s circle.

It was also another strong showing for Brue Hanover, who has been equally impressive this season with an identical stat line to Its Saturday Night.

At 8-5, Its Saturday Night paid $5.30 for the win, while a 5-4 exacta paid $7.

As easy as $123

Maloucious, with Tyler Borth at the controls, rallied to win Sunday’s eight dash by a nose at 60-1.

Trained by Carmen Auciello, the seven-year-old son of Sweet Lou recorded his seventh career win, stopping the teletimer in 1:54.1.

Owned by Fox Racing Inc., the bay gelding, originally a $25,000 purchase in 2020 at Lexington, paid $123.80 for his latest trip to the winner’s circle.

Maloucious now sports a 7-9-6 mark from 67 starts.
