Big effort Todd Kettleson trainee Little Lola stood tall in Saturday’s opening contest to record her first career victory. The 4-year-old Souper Speedy filly, out of the Silent Name (JPN) mare My Borrowed Angel, kicked off Turf Champions Day with a hearty 1 ¼-length triumph under rider Pietro Moran. The spirited effort from the Jecara Farms Corp. homebred was enough to rally for the narrow neck win. Daisuke Fukumoto handled the reins for the dark bay trained by Carlos Grant. The bay son of Souper Speedy–Bear’s Kitty Kitty looked every part of a 1-5 favourite, crossing the wire 5 ¼ lengths clear with Emma-Jayne Wilson in the irons. Trained by Bill Tharrenos for owners Racing Canada, Inc., and Natural Eight Stables, Souper Survivor paid $2.50. “The stretch run [was the most impressive part],” said Tharrenos. “He showed the ability that he has. He did it in a good way. He came running. I was very pleased. “He still has lots of growing to do. I still think we can work with him to be even better.” Souper Survivor.
