May 12, 2025

A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Woodbine.

20 candles

Leading apprentice Pietro Moran celebrated his 20th birthday in style, winning the third race on Sunday afternoon aboard Woodbine Oaks nominee Street Princess.

Teaming up with the Kevin Attard-trained filly for the first time, Moran and Street Princess led coast-to-coast to capture the bay’s first career victory by three-quarters-of-a-length.

A $2 wager on the birthday boy and 3-year-old daughter of Street Boss–Crowning Jewel paid $8 even.

1001 reasons

A $2 1-4 exacta in race four on Saturday afternoon returned a healthy $61.30 payout. The two horses responsible for the handsome payday were 9-1 winner Frost Bitten and 6-5 closing-line choice Glasweigian.

The former, a 3-year-old bay son of Frosted-Spider Dust, flipped the script on the favourite, charging late for the 1 ¼-length decision.

The determined effort earned the Mike De Paulo sophomore his first tally from four starts in 2025, and the trainer his 1,001st career win.

Lighting up the board

Sunday afternoon was one Gil’s Folly, and prudent punters, won’t soon forget. Leaving the gate from post four in race four, the unsung 34-1 longshot stunned 10 foes to notch his first career triumph in thrilling comeback fashion.

Gil’s Folly, under the command of rider Eswan Flores, surged from the back of the pack to cross the finish line a nose ahead of 2-1 choice Come On Big Lou.

The standout showing from the 3-year-old colt bred by Ellen J. Caines paid a whopping $71.70.
