Casse eyes Catch a Glimpse crown with solid one-two-three punch

August 22, 2018

TORONTO, August 22, 2018 – Trainer Mark Casse will send out the trio of Limonaia, Si Si Tequila and Eyeinthesky in the inaugural running of the $100,000 Catch a Glimpse Stakes, Saturday at Woodbine.

The Catch a Glimpse is named after Canada’s 2015 Horse of the Year, who won the Natalma at Woodbine before capturing the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and five other graded turf stakes. The City Zip filly was campaigned by Casse for owners Gary Barber, Michael James Ambler and Windways Farm.

The Hall of Fame conditioner will have two chances of winning the first edition of the Catch a Glimpse (six furlongs on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course for two-year-old fillies), in the form of Limonaia, an Ontario-bred daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, Si Si Tequila, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Yes It’s True, and Eyeinthesky, a Florida-bred daughter of Sky Mesa.

“It sure would be nice,” said assistant trainer Kathryn Sullivan of how special it would be for a Casse horse to win the race. “That would be lovely. We’d definitely like that.”

Limonaia comes into the race off a sharp win in her debut on June 30 at Woodbine.

Under Florent Geroux, the bay, in front by a head at track announcer Robert Geller’s stretch call, dug in and won by a hard-fought neck in the five-furlong race over the Tapeta.

“She’s been very impressive,” offered Sullivan. “You really can’t ask for anything better than what she did. It was excellent. To see that first time out was very impressive. She’s a really nice filly and has done everything well right from the start.”

That would be both on and off the track.

“She’s pretty easy-going from what I’ve seen,” noted Sullivan. “I would say she’s sensible.”

Si Si Tequila also heads into the Catch a Glimpse in winning form, having broken her maiden in her third start on July 21 at the Toronto oval.

“She’s doing great,” said Sullivan. “Everything is on point. She’s a super-nice filly – they all are – but she’s on the improve and is really coming into this race with some nice momentum.”

After finishing fourth in her career bow on June 10 at Woodbine, Si Si Tequila took third in her next start before making the trip to the winner’s circle in her latest effort.

Sent off at 4-1, jockey Patrick Husbands and Si Si Tequila were 4 ½-lengths in front at the stretch call of the 5 ½-furlong main track tilt, widening their advantage to five lengths on the wire.

“The distance is good for ‘Si Si,” noted Sullivan. “She hasn’t raced on the turf, but as I mentioned, she’s really improving and coming into the race well. She’s putting it all together and each race is a better performance. She’s moving forward.”

Eyeinthesky enters Saturday’s race off a tough trip in the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga on July 20.

Sixth in the six-furlong main track added-money event, the bay bobbled at the start and broke inward.

Sullivan expects a more polished performance in the Catch a Glimpse.

“She won her debut at Churchill (May 25) and was third in the Astoria Stakes (Belmont, June 7) last time out. Last time, it was a really tough trip in a graded race. This spot should be easier for her.”

The Catch a Glimpse is slated for Race 6 on the 10-race card, which also includes the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes (Race 8), which includes Casse runner Holding Gold.
