A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Woodbine. Smooth Sailing Anchored by a resurgent effort from Elysian Field, Hall of Fame conditioner Mark Casse swept the podium in Saturday’s $150,000 Seaway Stakes (G3) at Woodbine. The 16-time Sovereign Award winner completed the rare feat with the aforementioned Elysian Field, who returned to form following a ninth at Colonial Downs last time out, and the duo of Ticker Tape Home and Stormcast, who finished second and third, respectively. Bred by Anderson Farms Ont. Inc., Elysian Field, at 7-2, paid $9, while a $2 9-2-1 Casse trifecta $139.10. Elysian Field and Pietro Moran. Michael Burns Photography Glitz and Glam Souper Diva announced her presence at the stakes level with authority, capturing the $200,000 Muskoka in dominant gate-to-wire fashion on Sunday afternoon at Woodbine. Working with rider Jose Campos for trainer Steven Chircop, the 2-year-old filly looked much more comfortable in her second go around at the stakes level, setting the early pace and never looking back for the 4 ¼-length score. Now standing at 2-0-0 from four starts for owner 6 Deep Stable, Souper Diva, who was bred by Northern Dawn Stables Inc., paid $31.70 at 14-1. Souper Diva and Jose Campos. Michael Burns Photography What’s in a Name? Big Bold and First was all of those things in a dynamic coast-to-coast triumph of Sunday’s $200,000 Simcoe Stakes. Looking like anything but a 29-1 longshot, the rookie Bill Tharrenos charge delivered a performance wise beyond his years to stun nine contemporaries and the Woodbine faithful. The decisive victory mapped out by jockey Jose Campos gave the rider from Mexico City a sweep of the day’s two $200,000 2-year-old stakes. Big Bold and First’s stakes breakthrough paid $60 even.
