Perfect plan

War Strategy, under the direction of rider Sahin Civaci, executed the game plan with precision to capture Saturday’s eighth at Woodbine.

The comfortable 1 ¾-length victory was the 7-year-old War Front bay’s first from three starts this season and fourth across 23 starts overall (4-6-6; $232,532).

Trained by Michael Wright, Jr. for owner Elliott Logan of TEC Racing, War Strategy (12-1) paid $27.60.

Secrets revealed

Susan Rasmussen (Openwood Farm) homebred Skaal enjoyed a picture-perfect professional debut on Saturday afternoon at Woodbine, triumphing in the card’s ninth and final fixture.

Paired with rider Kemarie Blackett, the 4-year-old son of American Guru–Lady Marchfield soared down the lane to secure his maiden score by 1 ½ lengths.

Angus Buntain trains Skaal, who paid $18.60 at 8-1.

No Champagne problems

It was a bubbly Sunday afternoon for the aptly named Champagne Sunday, who led off Woodbine’s 10-race card with a determined maiden-breaking tally at 17-1.

Closing hard with Skye Chernetz in the irons, the 2-year-old Mohaymen filly, out of the Reload mare Reload the Bank, reached the wire three-quarters of a length clear of 7-2 foe Red Destiny.

One-for-one for trainer David Cotey, who co-owns the chestnut with Big Z Thoroughbred Racing, Champagne Sunday paid $37.80.
