June 23, 2023

TORONTO, June 23, 2023 – Woodbine celebrates Canada Day next Saturday, July 1, with an impressive race card featuring a stellar lineup of five graded stakes.

The first major stakes day of the 2023 season celebrates Canadian racing like no other. The Grade 2 Highlander and Grade 2 Nassau Stakes lead the way, followed by the Grade 3 Dominion Day, Grade 3 Selene and Grade 3 Marine Stakes part of the holiday card.

The $200,000 Highlander Stakes is 6 furlongs on the E.P. Taylor turf course. The Grade 2 event is for four-year-olds and upwards.

The second Grade 2 of the afternoon will be the Nassau Stakes. The Nassau is to be contested on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course for a purse of $175,000. The mile-long race is for fillies and mares, four years and upwards.

The furthest stakes of the day will be the Grade 3 $150,000 Dominion Day Stakes, at a mile and one-eighth on the Tapeta. It is open to four-year-olds and up.

The $150,000 Selene Stakes will be a mile and 1/16 on the Tapeta. The Grade 3 stake will be contested by 3-year-old fillies and could feature some Woodbine Oaks hopefuls.

Finally, the Grade 3 $150,000 Marine Stakes for three-year-olds will also be a mile and 1/16 on the Tapeta and could serve as a stepping stone towards The King’s Plate for several.

Each of these stakes include additional awards to eligible Ontario breds.

Fans are encouraged to wear red and white to the track for the Canada Day celebrations. Canada flags and other items to celebrate the day will be available.

Post time is 1:10 p.m. Fans can watch and wager on all the action through HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app.
