Fast Scene gets act together for Woodbine Cares victory

September 15, 2019

Toronto, September 15, 2019—Fast Scene, who had seized command on the final turn, held safe a resurgent Bayerly Seen to capture the first running of the $100,000 Woodbine Care Stakes by a head under Rafael Hernandez on Sunday.

The Woodbine Cares, a five-furlong turf race for two-year-old fillies, was run over a “firm” inner turf course with a field of 11.

Bayerly Seen, recently based at Indiana Grand for trainer Brad Cox, and Pennsylvania shipper Fast Scene, had hooked up early and soon turned the Woodbine Cares into a match race.

Fast Scene held a head advantage through a quarter in :21.33 and had stretched her margin to 1 ½ lengths with a quarter-mile to run. Bayerly Seen, switching to the outside for another crack at the leader, was a head in front at the furlong pole with a half-mile in :44.64 but a game Fast Scene battled back to score in :56.96.

Quality Heat, well back early, came on late to land third money, 3 ¾ lengths behind the runner-up. Avie’s Samurai, on the fringes throughout, was another length back in fourth. Egyptian Nights, who had stalked the leaders from third place, could not keep up and weakened late to finish fifth, a nose shy of fourth money.

Lady Fatima, Foolish Humor, My Doughnut, The Good Witch, Miss Lucy and Laxmi completed the order of finish. Nite Brite was scratched.

Based in Pennsylvania with trainer Timothy Hamm, Fast Scene had shipped up to record her second Tapeta win in the 5 ½-furlong My Dear Stakes, but did not fare as well in another trip here as she weakened to finish fourth in the 6 ½-furlong Catch the Glimpse over yielding turf.

“She showed a lot of class today, she dug in, the horse came to her and Rafael just threw a cross on her and she came back,” said Scooter Davis, assistant to Hamm. “I was kind of worried a little bit, wondering if she would handle the turf, but she kind of redeemed herself.”

The Kentucky-bred daughter of Fast Anna is owned by Blazing Meadows Farm LLC and Three Chimneys Farm LLC.

Fast Scene returned $10.10, $4.50 and $3.20 and the 8-3 exacta with Bayerly Scene ($3.60, $2.80) came back at $35.00. Quality Heat ($4.60) competed an 8-3-5 trifecta worth $122.75. The $1 superfecta of 8-3-2-10 yielded $738.85.
