ICYMI: First-Time Stakes Winners, Impressive Rebounds & More Define Spring Stakes Weekend

April 27, 2026

Savour the Moment

Take A Breath (GB) continued her upward ascent with a powerful display of patience to capture the $100,000 Royal Heroine (G3T), Saturday at Santa Anita.

Coming off her first career stakes score – graded or otherwise – in March’s Santa Ana (G3T), the 4-year-old Bated Breath (GB) filly exhibited the same poise that saw her get up late for the hard-earned triumph.

A half-length winner this time around, Take A Breath is now 5-0-2 ($194,670) across 14 starts for owners Chivalry Thoroughbred Racing and Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners.

The bay, trained by Mark Glatt, paid $11.20 as the 9-2 fourth choice.

Here She Comes Now…

Mony Mony had the right stuff to secure rider Sofia Vives’ third straight Star Shoot Stakes score, Saturday at Woodbine.

Making her fourth appearance of the year and first at Woodbine in the $125,000 six-furlong dash, Mony Mony took control after the opening quarter and never looked back en route to a confident one-length decision.

The sophomore Munnings filly scuffled in her stakes debut last month (sixth in the Serena’s Song at Turfway Park), but more than rebounded with an impressive effort Saturday.

Trained by Joe Sharp for owners Scott Dilworth, Evan Dilworth and Randy Andrews, Mony Mony now stands at 3-0-1 ($197,066) from seven starts lifetime.

As the 9-5 choice, she paid $5.90.

Stage Presence

The Churchill Downs faithful watched in awe Saturday as One Magic Philly delivered a spellbinding performance in the $200,000 Roxelana Stakes.

Eager to avenge a ninth last time out in January’s Inside Information (G2), the 5-year-old daughter of Good Magic–My Philly Girl was assertive and unyielding in a firm two-length triumph for breeder/owner John Gallegos.

Now back on track, the bay, trained by Brendan Walsh, improved her career scorecard to 5-3-1 with over $492,000 in prizes through 14 starts.

As the 5-2 second choice, she paid $7.20.

To the Point

It was a stakes debut to remember for Blackmail, who needed no extra incentive to outduel a condensed field of five in Saturday’s $150,000 Woodhaven at Aqueduct.

With Javier Castellano in the irons, the sophomore son of Not This Time–Waving found himself in a feverish final push for home with 4-5 favourite Instability (IRE) but held on just long enough to reach the wire a neck ahead.

The welcome result, which followed a pair of seventh place finishes to begin the season, elevated Blackmail to 2-1-0 lifetime ($114,425) across six starts.

Trained by Mark Casse for owner Gary Barber, Blackmail (10-1) paid $23.14.

On Brand

Fitz Right fit the bill of the most popular betting choice in Sunday’s $150,000 Memories Of Silver Stakes, storming down the lane for the confident 3 ½-length victory.

Well rested after not having appeared since January 18 – a dominant allowance win at Tampa Bay Downs – a recharged Fitz Right saved her best for last in the one-mile Memories Of Silver.

The controlled late push cemented the 3-year-old Charlatan filly’s third win from five starts (3-1-0; $144,450) and first of the stakes variety.

Trained by Chad Brown for owners Michael Dubb, William Lawrence, The Elkstone Group (Stuart Grant) and Michael Kisber, Fitz Right (7-5) paid $4.84.
