Cookie monster

Mo Cookie, under Leo Salles, edged away for a 1 1/2-length score in a dazzling debut in Saturday’s third race.

The daughter of Modernist, sent off as the 2-1 second choice, broke in at the start of the 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight main track sprint for 2-year-old fillies, but recovered quickly and settled into stride.

Trained by Mike De Paulo for owner and breeder Robert Marzilli (Zilli Racing Stables), Mo Cookie paid $6.60 for the win.

All that MajazĀ

After five runner-up efforts in seven starts, Majaz (GB) finally made it to the middle of the podium in Saturday’s seventh race.

Trained by Mark Casse for owner D.J. Stable LLC, the daughter of Dubawi (IRE) was at the top of her game in the 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight engagement that was contested on the inner turf.

Ridden by Rafael Hernandez, Majaz (GB) was 2 1/2 lengths clear at the stretch call, on the way to a three-length tally over firm ground in a time of 1:43.12.

It marked the first North American start for the dark bay, who finished fourth in her debut, before five consecutive runner-up performances.

She paid $6.80 for her breakthrough victory.
