May 10, 2011

This weekly feature offers a look at the top contenders (with her owner, trainer and most recent jockey) for the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, set for June 5 at Woodbine.

#5 – Silver Ami (Ivan Dalos/Josie Carroll/Luis Contreras) – recorded a nice 2011 debut on Sunday with a last-to-first run in an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles. The Silver Train chestnut is two-for-two now on Woodbine Polytrack.

#4 – Grand Style (G. W. Humphrey/Rusty Arnold/James Graham) – the Giant’s Causeway dark bay was fifth in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes in 2011 debut and will attempt to become the second straight Princess Elizabeth winner to take the Oaks, following the hoofsteps of Roan Inish.

#3 – Marketing Mix (Glen Hill FarmTom ProctorEmma-Jayne Wilson) – the Medaglia D’Oro dark bay did not run as a two-year-old but has made up for it with a smart maiden win and well-regarded second-place finish to Roxy Gap in the Fury Stakes on April 30 last time out.

#2 – Inglorious (Donver StableJosie CarrollChantal Sutherland) – is the most famed name on the list after flirting with a bid at the Kentucky Oaks (but not running) and being named the Queen’s Plate Winterbook choice. The Hennessy bay was fourth in the Fair Grounds Oaks on March 26 last time out. She was two-for-two in Woodbine stakes races in 2010.

#1 – Roxy Gap (Melnyk Racing StablesMark CassePatrick Husbands) – has run the fastest of any of the Oaks nominees and in good form after taking the Fury Stakes last time out as the odds-on favourite. The Indian Charlie bay is three-for-three on Woodbine Polytrack.
