October 30, 2023

High five, plus three, and a sweep

Leading rider Kazushi Kimura won five races on Saturday, including a sweep of the day’s stakes races. In the Frost King, Kimura partnered No More Options to a 16-1 upset score. Two races later, the champion rider was back in the stakes winner’s circle, this time with 7-5 choice Olivia Rose. The native of Hokkaido, Japan, who is closing in on 800 career wins, won three races on Sunday.

Hall of Fame exactor

Trainer Josie Carroll, inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2019, went one-two in Saturday’s seventh race. More Money Hunny bested stablemate Vazhi by a head in the seven-furlong turf race. An all-Carroll exactor returned $55.40 for a $1 bet. The multiple graded stakes-winning conditioner is less than 30 wins away from 1,000 for her career.

Perfect trip

Helluva Holiday, a 3-year-old daughter of Firing Line-Holidejavu, lit up the tote board in Saturday’s final race. Under Skye Chernetz, the chestnut filly got by a game rival to notch a head victory in the seven-furlong race over the Tapeta. Trained and co-owned by David Cotey, Helluva Holiday paid $53.30 for the win.

Dazzling debut

Loose Wire, a 3-year-old son of Street Sense-Dance With Doves, impressed in his first career start, crossing the wire a 6 ¼-length winner in Sunday’s first race. Trained by Kevin Attard for Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable LLC, the bay colt was the 2-1 second choice in the 1 1/8-mile Tapeta race.

Worth hearing

“We’re very, very happy, and I’m happy for my dad. Eighty-two-years-old and this is a big deal for him. That’s why I do it, for my dad. I’m very blessed.”

– Mary Self, owner of Frost King winner No More Options.

Worth watching

Reload’s Rascal, a 4-year-old son of Reload-Mi’an Mar, had a rough start to Saturday’s third race, but a patient ride from Patrick Husbands and a game effort from the bay gelding ended in a hard-fought score.

Worth knowing

A pair of $150,000 Grade 3 stakes, the Mazarine, and the Grey, share the spotlight on Saturday’s card. The $175,000 Grade 2 Autumn, for 3-year-olds and up, is on tap for Sunday.
