Spring has sprung

Spring Mountain, bred by DRF Woodbine handicapper/scribe Ron Gierkink, won Saturday’s second race. Trained by Catherine Day Phillips, the 4-year-old son of Silent Name (JPN)-Moonlit Beauty won his second consecutive race and now sports a record of 3-3-5- from 18 starts. Declan Carroll was aboard for the victory.

Hai there

Hai Bobbi, a 6-year-old daughter of Shanghai Bobbi-Fast Resource, won her first race since May 7, 2022, when she notched a 1 ½-length score in a 6 ½-furlong race over the E.P. Taylor turf on Saturday. Sofia Vives was in the irons for the victory.

That’s the spirit!

Animal Spirit, owned by TEC Racing, dashed away from his rivals down the lane to take top prize in Sunday’s fourth race, a six-furlong sprint over the E.P. Taylor turf. The 7-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid-Iconic Spirit is now 6-5-1 from 25 career starts. Trained by Martin Drexler, the Kentucky-bred was ridden to victory by Rico Walcott.

Four score

Four K Force, under Jeffrey Alderson, took the lead early and kept on going in Sunday’s fifth race contested over the inner turf at 1 1/16 miles. It was the first win for the 3-year-old son of Air Force Blue-Pomarine, who is trained by Julie Belhumeur for owner Robert Hardie. It was the eighth career start for the dark bay.

Worth watching

The sky was the limit for jockey Skye Chernetz and Thunderheavyrain, as the duo stormed home to win Sunday’s ninth race, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf tilt for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up.

Worth knowing

There is plenty of exciting racing action on tap this weekend. On Saturday, the $150,000 Pattison Singspiel Stakes (G3T) and $200,000 Canadian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2T) share the spotlight. The $100,000 Zadracarta Stakes, at five furlongs on the inner turf, and $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes, the final jewel in the Canadian Triple Tiara series, are slated for Sunday afternoon.
