Weekend Notables & Quotables (August 26-27)

August 28, 2023

Taking Flight

Air Force Reserve, a 4-year-old son of Air Force Blue-Wellesley Girl, broke his maiden in Saturday’s second race. Under Emma-Jayne Wilson, the Ontario-bred grey, trained by Mike De Paulo for owners Mickey Demers and Joseph De Paulo, coasted to a 4 ¼-length score in the 7 ½-furlong race over the inner turf.

In a Rhythm

Indian Music, trained and owned by Michael Sims, won her second race of the season, taking Saturday’s fourth race by 1 ½ lengths. Originally scheduled for five panels on the inner turf, the race was moved to five furlongs over the Tapeta. It was the fifth consecutive top-four finish for the chestnut filly, who is 2-1-1 in her past five engagements.

Coming Up Roses

It was no garden variety win for Olivia Rose in Saturday’s ninth race. Trained by dual hall of famer Mark Casse, the daughter of Silent Name (JPN)-Malibu Sunrise trounced her rivals to the tune of 13 ¾ lengths. It was the first win for the 2-year-old dark bay filly, bred and owned by Gabe Grossberg.

Final surge

Souper Sinclair and jockey Jose Campos didn’t throw in the towel in the running of Sunday’s $100,000 Algoma Stakes Presented by HPIbet. While it looked as though the pair would have to settle for a second-place finish, the duo kept on plugging away and ended up winning the seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds foaled in Canada.

Weather warning

The running of Sunday’s $200,000 Muskoka Stakes Presented by bet365 saw Hurricane Clair storm home to take the 6 ½ furlong Tapeta event for Canadian-foaled 2-year-old fillies. Under Sahin Civaci, the daughter of Silent Name (JPN)-Hurricane Lorraine got off to a slow start but was full of run late to notch a 5 ¼-length victory.

Worth repeating

“Before today, he really impressed in the last race and finished up really strong. Today, it was a little bit busy to stay up, there were so many frontrunners. He exploded again and impressed me again.” – Jockey Kazushi Kimura, who teamed with Rapid Test to win Sunday’s $100,000 Elgin Stakes Presented by HPIbet.

Worth watching

Keep your eyes on My Boy Prince, who ruled over his rivals to the tune of a 14-length scorcher in Sunday’s $200,000 Simcoe Stakes Presented by bet365. The son of Cairo Prince-Hopping Not Hoping is trained by dual hall of famer Mark Casse for owner Gary Barber.

Worth knowing

The $125,000 Toronto Cup, a one-mile turf event for 3-year-olds, is in the spotlight this Sunday.
