A Closer Look – Doug McPherson (June 22)

June 20, 2025

Handicapper and racing analyst Doug McPherson offers his insight on each horse in Sunday’s fifth race, on June 22 at Woodbine.

Race 5 (3:24 p.m. ET)

ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING $32,000 – $30,000

Purse $114,600. One And One Eighth Miles. (All Weather Track)

McPherson’s $20 bet: $10 tri 6 with 4 with 7,8

#1 Jim’s Hope – Probably a bit closer to the pace than he wants to be when third behind Soulmate at Gulfstream last time; factor.

#2 Good Sin – Rallied to beat $15,000 non-three company May 30. In search of his third consecutive win but in too deep here.

#3 Twowaycrossing – Comes into this off a pair of mid-pack efforts against similar. Does not look like there is enough pace to set things up for him.

#4 Journeyman – Was in good form against tough company in Tampa over the winter. Distant third in an N2X/$50,000 last time; rebound candidate with the drop in class.

#5 Exude – Empty in an N2L on May 31. Has not been in good form in a long time; could maybe plod along for a small share.

#6 Soulmate (pictured, Michael Burns Photography) – Has won three of his four most recent starts, including an N1X/$25,000 at Gulfstream last time. Catches a field with no serious pace and could wire them.

#7 Cornwall – Posted a lifetime best Beyer of 82 when rallying to be third on the inner turf on May 31. Will be hoping for some pace to run at; hopefully won’t bounce off that effort.

#8 Sunrise Drive – Used his fitness to his advantage when rallying to beat Hemlo Gold in a starter/optional $15,000 on May 23; on the edges.
