May 25, 2021 – A head-turning trifecta, a jaw-dropping claim, a popular performer honoured, encouraging horse sale news, and the push for equality in the saddle.

Here are five takeaways from last week:

A Ranger Hat Trick

Bruce Ranger is no stranger to success in the Standardbred sulky. So, it’s not a surprise by any means to see him atop the standings at a New England racetrack. But the veteran reinsman decided to go two better and top the charts at a trio of northeastern U.S. racetracks.

Ponying up $150,000

Trainer Leonard Powell made a Santa Anita record claim of $150,000 for Nimbostratus, a 3-year-old filly that took Saturday’s third race at the California oval with Abel Cedillo in the irons.

The previous Santa Anita record claim of $125,000 was made in 1997. There have been three claims at the current meet for $100,000.

Fitting tribute

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will bury the ashes of multiple stakes champion Quick Call, a star on and off the racetrack, at Clare Court, the half-mile jogging track at Saratoga Race Course.

Quick Call won two editions of the Grade 2 Forego, and nine of his 17 career starts.

“To know he’ll be at rest at Saratoga Race Course, which he loved so much, is a great ending.”

Setting Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale, which concluded on May 18, was a win-win for horse owners, breeders, and the industry itself.

There were records set across the board: in gross sales, average price, and median price, and for the seventh straight year the sale boasted a seven-figure sale-topper.

Stars in the saddle

Female jockeys are continuing to make their mark on the sport around the globe. Patrick Lawrence Gilligan shares his thoughts on how attitudes are shifting, albeit slowly, in recognizing the talents they bring to the table.
