Toronto horseplayer scores historic $1.1 million win on HPIbet – Hong Kong wager

May 22, 2020

TORONTO, May 22, 2020 – Playing HPIbet has paid off for Toronto’s Tommy “The Hammer” Massis in a big way with a massive $1.1 million win from an aggressive Pick-6 play on a race card half a world away at Hong Kong’s Happy Valley Racetrack.

Massis’ self described “emotional” win is the largest payout for a single wager ever registered on Woodbine’s popular mobile horseracing betting platform.

“Dreams do come true,” Massis told Steve Byk on Sirius XM’s At the Races program confessing that “This is all I ever wanted to do.”

The veteran horse player at Woodbine Racetrack has been doing his part during the COVID-19 lockdown to stay isolated at his home in the Greater Toronto Area, while waiting patiently for racing to return.  Even though the majority of the racing world remains on hold, there are a few select international tracks still running races. Fortunately for Massis, he was able to leverage HPIbet to tap into the live races happening at Happy Valley.

The former Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge winner did his homework by connecting with a helpful friend to learn some of the nuances of Hong Kong horseracing. Pick-6 wagers involve selecting the winners of six consecutive races. Massis’ Happy Valley ticket had a mix of favorites along with some calculated risks including picking a 50-1 longshot.

With his alarm set for 7:00 a.m. ET, Massis was able to place his wager and watch the races live on HPIbet to witness his $850 bet turn into the record windfall.

Massis provided some insight on how the wager came together during an interview with Peter Gross on the Down the Stretch podcast. Massis runs horses at Woodbine Racetrack under Calico Racing. He tells Gross that he plans to invest in the industry and can see himself “owning a lot of horses.”

HPIbet debuted in 2012, the platform has since become the go-to destination for Canadians to conveniently place bets, review handicapping statistics, and watch races on any mobile device.
