Woodbine Notebook: June 20-21

June 19, 2026

A look at some of this weekend’s most riveting stats and storylines at Woodbine and Woodbine Mohawk Park, including a pair of Ontario Sired Heritage Series Stakes, a top-tier inner turf tilt on Saturday, and a talented trotter looking to get back on track Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Bay day

Race Projection for Georgian Bay Stakes (Higher rating indicates projected winner)

5 Souper Sporty – 62.3

Inside track: “I think she will race well on the turf,” said John Mattine, who trains Money Heist. “Her action is very smooth. I always think a horse with that type of action will take to the turf. She is compact and well put together. She is well-balanced, too.”

Inside track: On June 3, Wine After Whiskey breezed 4 panels in :48.40 over the main track. Nine days later, at the same distance and over the same surface, he breezed in :47.80.

“He breezed by himself in the most recent work,” noted trainer, co-owner and co-breeder Michelle Love. “He can be a bit lazy on his own, so we tried to put him in a bit of traffic, just to keep him interested in his work. He did it easily and he did it well. I was surprised at how fast he went considering he was by himself.”

Green machine

“We’ve only had War Bomber (IRE) a short time, but he’s just a lovely, classy horse to be around. It’s a very competitive race, but he’s training well, and I know we will learn a lot from this first start back at Woodbine.” Trainer Tara Neigel on Saturday’s highly competitive seventh race on the inner turf.

Gal pal

Rookie trotter Blue Jean Gal, trained by Julie Walker and driven by James MacDonald, will look to rebound from a sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Casual Breeze, when she takes on seven in Leg 2 of her OSS Gold division on Saturday night at Mohawk.

“I misjudged that the horse on the outside would drive to the lead after the breaker. I was buried from then on. Never had room and lots of trot. Hopefully, the trip works out this week, and she should be very tough to beat.” – James MacDonald.
