TORONTO, August 1, 2018 – Rafael Hernandez jumped out to a big lead early in the meet and continues to top the jockey standings heading into August with 86 wins while defending dash-winning champion Eurico Rosa Da Silva is closing the gap in second-place.
Following a 12-win week to close out July, Da Silva is hot on Hernandez’s heels and trails by just five wins entering this week’s racing action. Da Silva is the top money-earner with his mounts banking more than $3.1 million. After sweeping Sunday’s stakes events, he has made a dozen successful stakes starts this meet.
Mark Casse has taken the lead in the trainer standings over Norm McKnight (55-50 wins), who secured his first Woodbine training title last year. Bolstered by 11 stakes wins, Casse has amassed more than $3 million in purses through the first 53 race days of the meet.
Longtime Casse client Gary Barber, who watched his star filly Wonder Gadot win the $1 million Queen’s Plate, tops the owner standings for earnings having accumulated more than $1.1 million in purses so far. Bruno Schickedanz is the win leader with his horses having crossed the finish line first in 28 races. Both Barber and Schickedanz have tripled up in stakes action, along with Chiefswood Stable and Ivan Dalos, while Entourage Stable has taken four stakes titles courtesy of Pink Lloyd, one of the winningest horses so far this season.
Other four-time winners include Milwaukee Magic, who is undefeated at the meet for trainer Kevin Attard and owner Joshua Attard, and the McKnight-trained Danzig Rainbow, who has made six starts for Rainbow Stables. Wonder Gadot is the richest with more than half a million earned at Woodbine this season thanks to her big Plate payday and runner-up cheque in the Oaks.
The 133-day Thoroughbred meet continues tonight, with first race post time set for 6:45 p.m.
