Inside Track for May 17-18 A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Woodbine. Brindi Goes Back-to-Back Brindi (IRE) brought her A-game in Saturday’s $100,000 Ruling Angel Stakes Presented by Ketel One. Operating out of post seven, the 3-year-old daughter of No Nay Never–Salamah (IRE) needed every inch to ward off the triad of Somethinabouther, Social Code, and Shotgun Wedding, who collectively finished within a length of the leader. With the hard-fought victory, Brindi (IRE) is now a perfect two-for-two since coming over to Woodbine for the Starshoot Stakes on April 26. Bred by Framont Ltd. and trained by Kelsey Danner, Brindi (IRE) paid $8.60. Three for Me Hall of fame conditioner Bob Tiller netted a hat-trick over the weekend to climb within one win of 2,150 for his storied career. Tiller teamed up with two-time Sovereign Award winner for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey, Sofia Vives, to break the ice in Saturday’s third race with 5-year-old mare Magic Modie before completing the Tiller-trained trifecta in the fourth on Sunday with Go Kart Mozart. Rider Daisuke Fukumoto and fourth-year filly Maximum Fifty (pictured) bridged the gap with a 1 ½-length coast-to-coast tally in Saturday’s fifth. (Church and) State Champ Rider Rafael Hernandez kept Church and State separate from his contemporaries with a valiant comeback effort to take Sunday afternoon’s $100,000 King Corrie Stakes by a half-length. In the 3-year-old gelding’s first taste of action following a fourth in January’s Leonatus Stakes at Turfway Park, Church and State showed impressive grit and determination to make up enough ground in time for his first stakes score. The Dale Desruisseaux-trained son of Caravaggio–Full Snow Moon remains undefeated across three career starts at Woodbine (4: 3-0-0 lifetime). Share This:Share
