Canadian Triple Crown bound? Mansetti primed for Prince of Wales test

September 8, 2025

TORONTO, September 8, 2025 – Mansetti, the impressive winner of the 166th King’s Plate, will attempt to take the next step toward potential OLG Canadian Triple Crown glory when he headlines a field of seven Canadian-foaled 3-year-olds in Tuesday’s $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie Race Track.

Trained by multiple graded stakes winner Kevin Attard – who also sends out Faber and Dewolf – and ridden once again by standout apprentice Pietro Moran, who piloted the colt to a front-running victory in the $1 million King’s Plate at Woodbine on August 16, Mansetti has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favourite for the 1 3/16-mile dirt contest.

The Ontario-bred son of Collected out of the Sky Mesa mare Gidget Girl is owned by the father-son team of Bill and Al Ulwelling, who previously teamed with Attard to win this race with homebreds Velocitor (2023) and Haddassah (2021). They will also be represented by Faber, who finished sixth in the Plate, in the Prince of Wales.

“He (Mansetti) is coming into the race in great order,” said Attard, who won the Plate with a pair of fillies, Moira in 2022 and Caitlinhergrtness in 2024. “Obviously, it’s a different surface and different distance, so there are new challenges, but he’s always been a very adaptable type.”

Moran, Woodbine’s leading rider by wins in 2025, also lauded Mansetti’s versatility.

“It’s a different surface but I don’t think it will matter with him because he’s such a talented horse, he doesn’t seem concerned,” said the 20-year-old. “You definitely need a special kind of horse if you want to have a shot at the Triple Crown, and I think we’ve got one here with Mansetti. We’ve already got one race out of the way, now we’re looking for the second.”

Should Mansetti, bred by Jungle Racing, LLC, capture the 90th running of the Prince of Wales Stakes, he would move one step closer to becoming the first horse since Wando (2003) to sweep the Canadian Triple Crown, which concludes with the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes, contested over 1½ miles on the inner turf at Woodbine on September 28.

Claiming all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown is widely considered one of Canadian sport’s most elusive and prestigious accomplishments.

Since its establishment in 1959, only seven horses have completed the sweep: New Providence (1959), Canebora (1963), With Approval (1989), Izvestia (1990), Dance Smartly (1991), Peteski (1993), and Wando (2003). Notably, Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield conditioned three of those champions.

Five additional horses accomplished the feat prior to its formal recognition as the Triple Crown.

The most recent sweep attempt came in 2020, when Mighty Heart won the Plate and the Prince of Wales but finished off the board in the Breeders’ Stakes.

Despite the historic implications, Attard remains focused on what’s directly in front of them.

“In racing, you learn early to never look past the task at hand. It’s easy to be swayed to look down the road and dream big, but we’ll focus on this for now.”
