TORONTO, April 21 – Debmar Stable’s Dan the Tin Man held off a closing Five Iron to capture Sunday’s $150,000 Woodstock Stakes, at Woodbine. Dan the Tin Man, a dark bay son of Songandaprayer, set early splits of :22.48 and :45.37 with Black Hornet buzzing in his ear in the six furlong ‘Poly’ sprint. Patrick Husbands asked Dan the Tin Man for his best run into the stretch, opening up a huge lead at the quarter pole, and kept the favoured Five Iron at bay to win by a half-length in 1:10.21. A front-running score was always the plan for Husbands. "Looking at the Racing Form, he ran a very nice race with an 81 Beyer (maiden win on July 8, 2012 at Woodbine)," said Husbands. "I told myself to try and steal it. I thought if he could run back to that Beyer, that he’d win this race. He showed he was the best today." Power Phil was up for show in a five-horse field, reduced by the scratches of Lennon and Kitten Candy. Dan the Tin Man, conditioned by Ricky Griffith, improved his record to 2-0-1 from seven starts, while banking $90,000. He returned $13.60, $3.90 and $2.70, pairing with Five Iron ($2.50, $2.10) for a $27.30 (1-6) exactor. A 1-6-7 (Power Phil, $2.40 to show) triactor was worth $59.40. Share This:Share
