Enstone rock solid for Selene

May 18, 2017

TORONTO, May 18 – East West Stables’ Enstone will be looking for consecutive added-money scores when she bursts from the gate in Sunday’s $125,000 Grade 3 Selene Stakes, at Woodbine.

Trained by Mark Casse, the Tiznow bay arrives at the 1 1/16-mile Tapeta route for sophomore fillies from a convincing 2 3/4-length victory in the seven furlong Fury Stakes on April 30. Enstone graduated at that distance on October 23 at Woodbine setting up a good second in the prestigious $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes to wrap up her juvenile campaign.
"She shouldn’t have any trouble going long. She has in the past and I think that’s probably more her thing. Certainly in her last race she looked like she was ready to go further," said assistant trainer Kathryn Sullivan.
In the Princess Elizabeth, Enstone bobbled slightly at the break before setting off to lead the field through all but the final jump when nailed by Selene rival Ghostly Presence.
"She didn’t have a great start and then she went to the lead and just got caught down the lane," said Sullivan.
However, the talented bay, who wintered in Florida at Palm Meadows, came back stronger than ever in her seasonal debut earning a 76 Beyer Speed Figure while well clear of rallying Selene rival Financial Recovery.
Enstone has come out of the Fury score in good order breezing five furlongs in 1:00.40 on May 12 in her final prep for the Selene.
"She had a very nice work the other day with Patrick Husbands. She went with an older filly and Patrick took back and rallied to finish up in a tie. It was a great work," said Sullivan.
That effort leaves Husbands with plenty of trip choices for Sunday’s event, a key prep for the Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, which is slated for Sunday, June 11.
"She seems pretty happy to run on the lead but if the gates open and things don’t work out that way it’s nice to have options," said Sullivan.
Enstone is certainly one for Canadian racing fans to keep an eye on as Casse has kept the filly Queen’s Plate eligible.
"Obviously we go race by race, but at this point there’s no reason not to continue down that path. The main goal is the Oaks and I think after the Oaks we’ll see where we’re at," said Sullivan. "The Plate is a $1-million dollar race so there’s a lot of incentive to keep going. She’s a very nice filly."
The Grade 3 Selene is slated as Race 8 on Sunday’s 10-race card. First post time is 1PM. Fans can watch and wager on all the action via HPIbet.com.
