‘He’s like fine wine’: Forester’s Fortune chases second Vice Regent score

August 15, 2025

TORONTO, August 15, 2025 – Forester’s Fortune, an 8-year-old son of Old Forester, who won the 2022 edition of the Vice Regent Stakes, will look to add a second victory in the five-furlong grass feature, Sunday at Woodbine.

Trained by Rodney Barrow, the chestnut arrives at the inner turf test for Ontario-bred 3-year-olds and up sporting a record of 5-8-7 from 45 starts and a 3-7-3 mark from 21 turf races.

“He’s doing very well, knock on wood,” said Barrow, of the gelding who finished second in last year’s Vice Regent and seventh in the 2023 running. “He is such a lovely horse, and we are blessed to have him. He is an example of the older you get, the better you get.”

In his last two races, Forester’s Fortune posted a third in a six-furlong race over the E.P. Taylor turf on June 29 and was most recently a hard-charging second in a 6 ½-furlong race over the same course.

“He always comes with that big run,” said Barrow. “He was fifth in his first start of this year, then he was third and then second. He’s the type of horse who will get better as the year goes on. He’s like fine wine.”

While Forester’s Fortune will have less runway to work with over the inner turf – the length of the stretch is 978 feet compared to 1,440 on the E.P. Taylor – Barrow isn’t concerned.

“He loves the grass, and he loves to chase down horses,” said Barrow. “That’s his thing – he comes flying late. He just needs room to run and when he does, he just flies. He doesn’t worry about anything other than racing. I have had him since he was a yearling and we all love him so much.”

Forester’s Fortune, out of the Beau Genius mare Nursery Song, launched his career in 2019 with a pair of third-place finishes, including in his second appearance, the Victoria Stakes.

Owned by Claudette Tremblay, Peta Gaye Allard, Bridget Miller, Catherine Uquhart, and Archie Lee, he broke his maiden in his first start of 2020, following that effort up with another trip to the winner’s circle next time out.

The Barbados-born Barrow, who won his first race with Pierian on June 11, 2020, will once again have friends and family back home cheering for Forester’s Fortune on Saturday.

“They love watching him race,” said Barrow. “He’s the type of horse you love to cheer for. He has a lot of support back home in Barbados.”

Bred in Ontario by John Carey, Forester’s Fortune has recorded $466,376 in purse earnings.

The wagering menu includes Rolling Double, Exacta, 0.20 Trifecta, 0.20 Superfecta, 0.20 Pick 3 and $1 Swinger.
