A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Woodbine. Uncorked Fire and Wine, paired with rider Slade Jones, could not be tamed in a gate-to-wire triumph of the $250,000 Coronation Futurity, Saturday at Woodbine. In his stakes debut for owner Paul Ryder, the 2-year-old Lexitonian colt looked the part of a seasoned veteran, jumping out to an early lead and maintaining command throughout the 1 1/8-mile main track event. Bred in Ontario by James and Janeane Everatt, Arika Meeuse and Robert Marzilli, the bay was originally a $5,000 purchase at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February Mixed Sale. At 16-1 in the Coronation Futurity, Fire and Wine paid $34.60. Fire and Wine and Slade Jones. Entering the 1 1/16-mile main track affair after a victorious stakes debut (Glorious Song on Oct. 12 at Woodbine), the freshman Chiefswood Stables filly patiently stalked the pace before striking the lead mid-stretch and pulling away with ease for the 4 ½-length tally. In extending her win streak to three overall, Piper’s Gift elevated her career scorecard to 3-1-0 for over $226,000 in prize money across five starts. She paid $2.90 as the Coronation Futurity’s 2-5 choice. Piper’s Gift and Rafael Hernandez. Michael Burns Photography Music to their ears Familiar faces were all around Mad World after an impressive two-length triumph of the third tilt on Woodbine’s Sunday program. Under the steady hand of rider Daisuke Fukumoto, the 2-year-old son of Upstart–Two Tribes found his rhythm going into the upper stretch and proved too much for five foes to handle, stopping the clock in 1:47.48. Mad World’s maiden-breaking moment for trainer Bob Tiller came in his fourth start as pro and improved on a third-place result last time out (1-0-1). Bred and owned by Frank Di Giulio Jr., Mad World, at 17-1, paid $37 even. Mad World and Daisuke Fukumoto. Michael Burns Photography Stay tuned Live racing continues Thursday.
