Inside Track for June 28-29

A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Woodbine.

Double the Stakes

It was a two-entrée Saturday for reigning Outstanding Apprentice Jockey Sofia Vives, who found the winner’s circle in the Highlander (G2) with Canada’s Horse of the Year Patches O’Houlihan and again later in the Nassau (G2) with Ocean Club.

Vives showed her versatility taking one stakes contest with the favourite (Patches O’Houlihan at 4-5) and another with an underdog (Ocean Club at 12-1), paying $3.60 and $27.80, respectively.

The multiple graded stakes winning rider followed up her Stellar Saturday with two more wins on Sunday.

Upper crust

Mansetti’s path to ‘Top King’s Plate Contender’ status brightened after the 3-year-old Kevin Attard charge rediscovered his form in the $150,000 HPIbet Marine Stakes (G3) at Woodbine.

Out to avenge a troubled fifth in the Queenston Stakes, Mansetti, under the steady hand of rider Pietro Moran, showed great poise and fitness to ward off runner-up Scorching (5-2) and 6-5 choice Megalodon.

Owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling, and named after a popular pizza and pasta restaurant in their home state of Minnesota, Mansetti paid $12.80 at 5-1.

Second to None

Muddled in a strong, yet frustrating stretch of three straight second-place finishes, Silent Reserve broke the curse Sunday, making a triumphant return to the winner’s circle in Woodbine’s seventh.

The 5-year-old Silent Name (JPN)–Siddona gelding, trained by Mike Mattine, let his presence be known early, jumping to the front of the field and not once relinquishing the lead for the 2 ½-length score.

Purchased for $15,000 (CDN) at the 2021 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ont.) Premier Yearling Sale, Silent Reserve is 5-5-0 from 14 starts for Carlo D’Amato and Stacey Van Camp.

Stay tuned

Live racing continues Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Grade 3 $150,000 Hendrie Stakes takes the spotlight. Post time for both days is 1:05 p.m.
