TORONTO, August 29, 2019 – La Feve, a three-year-old daughter of George Vancouver, goes for her second straight Woodbine added-money score, this time in the $100,000 La Lorgnette Stakes, one of two add-money events slated for Sunday at the Toronto oval. Owned by Madaket Stables, Robert LaPenta, Lindy Farms and Team Hanley, La Feve made her Canadian debut a memorable one when the filly took the Duchess Stakes on August 3. Under leading rider Rafael Hernandez, the Graham Motion trainee recorded a three-quarter length win in the seven-furlong main track feature, returning $15.30 for the victory. “She broke good out of the gate and put herself in good position,” praised Hernandez. “We didn’t have too much traffic in the race. She gave me a good kick down the lane. Everything worked out perfect. “We were very happy with her,” said Joy Cooper, travelling assistant to Motion. “Usually, the instructions are just, ‘Let them break and put them where they’re comfortable.’ If I can’t get hold of him (Graham) for some reason, I usually give them the same (instructions).” What stood out for Motion? “Probably the way she did it, I guess,” said Motion, who is zeroing in on 2,450 career training wins. “I thought it was an impressive enough performance and it certainly warrants going back up there on a track that’s not always the easiest to handle – not everybody handles it.” La Feve and jockey Rafael Hernandez winning the Duchess Stakes on August 3 at Woodbine Racetrack. (Michael Burns Photo) The Duchess was the fifth start of 2019 for La Feve, whose first six starts came in France, prior to her North American debut, a third-place effort in the Grade 3 Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream on February 3. Bred by Bernard Leclere and Mme. Raymonde Leclere, La Feve comes into the 1 1/16-mile main track feature with two wins, one second and four fourth-place finishes from 11 lifetime starts. Her first win came at Mont-de-marsan last July, a half-length victory over seven furlongs on the turf. “She’s pretty straightforward, really,” said Motion. “She’s been fairly uncomplicated and she’s been great for us. It’s up to us to keep her happy. She seems good coming into this race. I feel good about bringing her back up there, for sure.” Last year, jockey Jerome Lermyte partnered Shamrock Rose to victory in the La Lorgnette, the duo stopping the clock in 1:44.37. The La Lorgnette is scheduled as race 10 of 11 on Sunday’s 1:05 p.m. program. The $100,000 Ontario Jockey Club Stakes, a six-furlong main track sprint for three-year-olds, is slated as race eight.
