TORONTO, September 2 – Overlooked in the betting with undefeated Be Vewy Vewy Quiet favoured in a short field of freshmen, Like What I See and jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson pulled off the 12-1 upset in Saturday’s co-featured $100,000 Colin Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack. Sent postward as the longest shot on the toteboard, Like What I See bested the field scratched down to just four runners in the six-furlong stakes event contested on the Woodbine main. The Nicholas Gonzalez trainee left from post five and raced strongly on the lead through fractions of :23.02 and :46.54 before holding off his rivals by half a length at the wire for the 1:11.04 victory. Like What I See’s stablemate, Tenacity Zip (Jesse Campbell), followed in second throughout and was swarmed by 1-5 favourite Be Vewy Vewy Quiet (Sheena Ryan) and Piven (Patrick Husbands), who both went by in the stretch and battled the rest of the way to finish in a photo for place. Piven ultimately edged out Be Vewy Vewy Quiet for the runner-up honours. “In post parade, I thought it would be a jockeys’ race,” said Wilson. “I thought between Jesse and Sheena and Patrick, the three of them would be sitting in front of me and I’d be watching what was going on and hopefully make a run down the lane. We broke his maiden going seven-eighths with a half in :47, :48, I had no anticipation of being on the lead at all, but that’s horse racing. Doors open, he was in it, and I wasn’t going to take any run away from him. “Plan B worked. It always looks good when you win. He’s a good horse. He’s learning slowly. Every race he runs, he gets a little better. Today when he broke, he just put his ears back and he was just on the bridle in my hands the whole way. I was pretty confident.” Bred in New Jersey by Hal Snowden Jr., the Bold Warrior-After the Applause gelding was a $13,000 yearling purchase at the Ocala Breeders’ Fall Mixed Sale. Now a five-time starter, he boasts back-to-back wins and a six-figure bankroll for owners Julianne Lewis, Martha Gonzalez, Richard Rizzo and Ralph Klicker. “He made the races early, but he was still immature in his own way,” said Nick Gonzalez. “He ran a couple good seconds – obviously he ran second to Tenacity Zip one time – and he progressed as he got on in his racing career. I’ll tell you one thing, when this weather cooled down, he changed a little.” Like What I See returned $26.20 to his backers at the betting windows and combined with Piven for a 5-4 exactor worth $80.60.
