Magical Trickster aces class check in Frost King

October 18, 2026

TORONTO, October 18, 2026 – Magical Trickster stretched out in career start number two and remained undefeated in winning the $150,000 Frost King Stakes Sunday at Woodbine.

Teaming for the first time with Woodbine’s leading rider Pietro Moran, the gelded chestnut son of Collusion Illusion broke sharply from post position 4, as the field of six exited the chute, in the 7-furlong main track dash for 2-year-olds, sired by a stallion standing in Ontario.

As the opening quarter mile fraction went up, Marvellous Marvin led by a length to Magical Trickster. Bull Page Stakes winner Souper Survivor raced third. Signature Winner was fourth, longshot Slovan was fifth and It Wasn’t a Bluff completed the early running order.

Into the turn, Marvellous Marvin continued to lead with Magical Trickster in hot pursuit, followed by even money favourite Souper Survivor, as the leader passed the half-mile marker in :45.42.

Entering the stretch, the Julia Carey-trained Magical Trickster was shaken up by Moran and responded with vigor, rolling by outside of Marvellous Marvin inside the sixteenth pole, carrying on, to score by 1 3/4 lengths in a final time of 1:23.25.

Marvellous Marvin held for second. Even money and one paced favourite Souper Survivor finished third. 18-1 shot It Wasn’t a Bluff was fourth.

Magical Trickster, a $63,000 (CDN) yearling purchase at the Canadian September 2025 (CTHS – Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society – Ontario Division) Yearling Sale, debuted at Woodbine on September 13th, scoring at first asking over the main track, by 1 3/4 lengths, when going five and half furlongs with Emma-Jayne Wilson up.

With Wilson committed to riding favourite Souper Survivor in the Frost King, Woodbine’s leading rider Pietro Moran took the call on the ‘chromie’ chestnut with four white socks.

“His first race, Emma had to ride him a bit,” said Moran.

“I worked him a few times. By himself, he works easy, but he’s kind of one, you got to keep reminding. I knew that coming in, you have to keep after him,” said Moran.

“You know it worked. He never stops. He keeps trying. Nice horse”

Carey breezed Magical Trickster twice after his debut win and was encouraged that he might be able to stretch out even further to two turns going forward.

“It’s only a second start. He’s just learning and he’s a baby. Let’s hope there’s a bright future for him in this Ontario-sired program. It’s a wonderful program,” said Carey.

With the Frost King win, the Derek Chin-owned Magical Trickster (Collusion Illusion – Samsal, by Consolidator) remains undefeated after two career starts.

Bred in Ontario by Huntington Stud Farm Corp, Magical Trickster was listed at 4-1 morning line, went off at 2-1 and returned $6.20 while earning his first stakes win.
