Nominations released for Grade 1 Canadian International

September 22, 2023

TORONTO, September 22, 2023 – Twenty-six accomplished runners from around the world are nominated to the 84th running of the $750,000 Canadian International, one of Thoroughbred racing’s most storied events.

The Grade 1 stakes race for 3-year-olds and up, contested over 1 ¼ miles on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, is scheduled for Sunday, October 8 at Woodbine Racetrack.

Some of the biggest names in racing history, both horse and human, have claimed victory in what has become a staple on Woodbine’s lucrative fall racing calendar.

The legendary Secretariat won the International 50 years ago, in what was the legend’s final race. Other notable winners include Bunty Lawless, voted “Canadian Horse of the Half Century,” who won in 1938 and 1941. Dahlia, the 1974 winner, became the first horse to win Group/Grade 1 stakes in England, France, Ireland, U.S., and Canada.

Joshua Tree won three editions (2010, 2012-13). Desert Encounter won back-to-back runnings, in 2018 and 2019, as did George Royal (1965-66), and Shepperton (1942-43).

Although the race has undergone various changes over the years, the International has maintained its status as one of the most sought-after trophies for Thoroughbred connections across the globe.

This year’s race is once again shaping up to produce another compelling chapter in Canadian International history.

The lucrative October 8 race card, a highlight of the turf racing season at Woodbine, also features the $750,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1) over 1 ¼ miles for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, the $250,000 Nearctic Stakes (G2), a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up, and the $200,000 Algonquin Stakes, a five-furlong sprint over the inner turf for 2-year-olds.
