TORONTO, July 14 – On Rainbow Bridge broke her maiden in style in Sunday’s $150,800 Shady Well Stakes, at Woodbine. On Rainbow Bridge, trained by David Cotey for Triple K Stables, became the first stakes winner for apprentice rider Skye Chernetz with a smart score in the 5 1/2-furlong ‘Poly’ sprint for two-year-old fillies, bred in Ontario. Where’s the Carat was quickest from the gate setting splits of :22.64 and :46.06 with Bella’s Rebel and a rail-riding On Rainbow Bridge tracking her speed. A confident Chernetz urged On Rainbow Bridge into motion through the turn, angling off the rail at the top of the lane, with favoured Skylander Girl also getting into gear. However, there would be no denying Chernetz and On Rainbow Bridge as they sprinted away from field to win by 1 ½-lengths in a final running time of 1:04.38. Paladin Bay rallied to earn the place position over Where’s the Carat. Chernetz was all smiles in the winner’s circle. "We had a perfect trip, sat behind, a spot opened up and she just went," grinned Chernetz. The result was a complete turnaround from the dark bay’s difficult debut. "The first time she ran, she was really green," said Chernetz. "We got left at the gate, but when she got in the stretch she picked it up and kicked on and we didn’t get beat much. We knew she was going to be a good horse." On Rainbow Bridge banked $90,000 in victory, while improving her record to 1-0-1 from two career starts. She returned $12.70, $7.10 and $4.70, pairing with Paladin Bay ($24.40, $8.80) for a $312.90 (1-6) exactor. A 1-6-10 (Where’s the Carat, $6.20 to show) triactor was worth $2,475.30.
