Top 5 Oaks contenders (through May 23)

May 24, 2011

This weekly feature offers a look at the top contenders (with her owner, trainer and most recent jockey) for the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, set for June 5 at Woodbine.

#5 – Grand Style (G. W. Humphrey/Rusty Arnold/James Graham) – hangs on the list after her five-furlong move in 1:01 3/5, breezing, fifth of 25, over Keeneland’s Poly surface on Saturday. The Giant’s Causeway dark bay peaked well for Rusty Arnold and Mike Doyle in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes last year, may again early next month.

#4 – Bear It’s Time (Bear Stables Ltd./Reade Baker/Luis Contreras) – is brand new to the list after a sparkling 5 ¾-length win in the seven furlong Lady Angela Stakes on the Holiday Monday. The Philanthropist chestnut will have to turn around in 13 days, but the 84 Beyer figure recorded in the race, has her near where she needs to be.

#3 – Marketing Mix (Glen Hill FarmTom ProctorEmma-Jayne Wilson) – worked five furlongs in 1:03 1/5, breezing, ninth best of 14, at Churchill Downs on Thursday. The Medaglia D’Oro dark bay is being thought of as the major threat to the top two in the Oaks.

#2 – Roxy Gap (Melnyk Racing StablesMark CassePatrick Husbands) – breezed five furlongs in 1:01 4/5, 11th of 45. She is fast, accomplished, but is not likely to be as well-backed as Inglorious. The Indian Charlie bay has strong Beyers, but has not been further than a mile in her career. The Oaks is a 1 1/8-mile race.

#1 – Inglorious (Donver StableJosie CarrollLuis Contreras) – is still atop the list after her strong performance in the La Lorgnette. No work this week which is no surprise after her efforts in the stakes race. Still number 1 based on accomplishment, distance pedigree and connections. The Hennessy bay is the likely favourite in the race.
