Trini Brewnette pours it on late to win Algoma

August 29, 2018

TORONTO, August 29, 2018 – Derek Chin’s Trini Brewnette rallied last to first to capture Wednesday night’s $100,000 OLG Algoma Stakes, presented by Woodbine Entertainment, at Woodbine.

Trained by Kevin Attard, the five-year-old daughter of Milwaukee Brew saved her best running for last under leading rider Eurico Rosa da Silva to capture the 1 1/16-mile Tapeta route for fillies and mares, three-year-old and upwards, for graduates of the CTHS Yearling Sale.

It was the second victory on the card for the combination of Chin and Attard who earlier on Canadian Millions night enjoyed Blessed Two’s impressive score in the OLG Simcoe Stakes.

The 2018 CTHS Premier Yearling Sale kicks off on Thursday at noon at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion and Chin expects to make a splash.

“That’s probably correct,” laughed Chin. “You put me in a sale and I’ll probably buy something. And now even better after tonight.”

Trini Brewnette, who captured the South Ocean Stakes as a juvenile, picked up her third career win with the stylish Algoma score.

“She looked good. The groom told me she was working very well. When you get that kind of ride and don’t get into trouble at the top of the stretch, I thought she’d come home,” said Chin.

Sparkles’ Girl and Sugar Jones set the pace in the Algoma through splits of :25.98, :51.01 and 1:14.98, with Crumlin Queen, Fresh Princess and Spring Tempest tracking their early foot.  Fresh Princess was urged into motion approaching the far turn and loomed large at the top of the lane, but there would be no denying the powerful late stride of Trini Brewnette who surged home a 1 3/4-length winner. Bear Paw rallied late to earn place over Fresh Princess. Trini Brewnette stopped the clock in 1:46.27.

Trini Brewnette, bred in Ontario by Mr. and Mrs. Bud Malette and Trinity West Stables Inc., banked $60,000 in victory while improving her record to 3-7-3 from 23 career starts.

She paid $13.40, $6.90 and $5.30 combining with Bear Paw ($15.80, $7.60) for a 6-2 exacta worth $217.70. With Fresh Princess ($4.60) third, the 6-2-4 trifecta paid $1190.10. Sparkles’ Girl completed the 6-2-4-8 superfecta, which returned $2519.30 for a $1 ticket. Crumlin Spirit was scratched.
