Woodbine to observe moment of silence on Saturday in honour of outrider Darren Fortune

September 8, 2017

TORONTO, September 8 – To honour the memory of exercise rider and outrider Darren Fortune, who perished during a morning training accident on Friday morning, a moment of silence will be held following Saturday’s seventh race, at Woodbine.

Fortune, a veteran exercise rider for trainer Nick Gonzalez, was a member of the Woodbine Entertainment Group team as an outrider since 2008. The 43-year-old native of Barbados was a familiar face to many racing fans leading the horses out to post parade from the paddock on race days.
To honour Fortune, black arm bands will be worn by the jockeys, valets and gate crew as well as all of the grooms for Gonzalez-trained horses racing on Saturday.
Following the seventh race (4:24 p.m. ET), the outriders will congregate on horseback at the finish line to lead a moment of silence where they will be joined by members of Woodbine’s racing community.
First post time on Saturday’s 10-race card is 1 p.m.
