TORONTO, Ont.—Coming off a lacklustre finish on Tapeta in the Woodbine Oaks, Financial Recovery was back on the turf for Saturday’s one-mile $125,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies. But after the first-half mile, the outlook appeared to be grim for the Catherine Day-Phillips trainee. “Fairly desperate for a bit, until about the three-eighths pole,” said Day Phillips, when asked about her feelings as the race progressed. “ I was concerned that she wasn’t on the bridle and really wasn’t looking to make up any ground, and David was niggling at her and she wasn’t really responding. But then David, as in jockey David Moran, got Financial Recovery on the move at with three furlongs to run and she maintained her momentum to reach the wire a half-length to the good of the pacesetting Listenlindalisten. “ I didn’t think we’d be that far back,” said Moran. “They were just going away from her a little bit so I let her find her feet and came running.” Listenlindalisten had carved out fractions of :23.62, :47.34 and 1:12.19 with 2.90-1 third choice Silver Princess stalking from the outside and the 9-5 favorite Ellan Vannin moving into contention from just off the rail. The front-runner continue to show the way through six furlongs in 1:12.19 as Silver Princess began to weaken and Little Christy, the 2.75-1 second choice, dropped out of contention. Greek Justice had entered the fray at that point and she and Listenandlisten continued to duel at the eighth. But Financial Justice was in full flight and ran down the leaders in a final time of 1:36.48. Greek Justice held second by a head over a game Listenandlisten with Ellan Vannin finishing 1 ¾-lengths back in fourth. Crumlin Queen, Silver Princess, Missy Crissy and Little Christy completed the order of finish in the field of eight. Owned by Narola LLC and Anderson Farm, Financial Recovery was winning her first stakes race “It’s very important, said David Anderson, of Anderson Farm, who also bred the filly. “It’s what we do as breeders. I own the mother. I own three sisters and a brother so we have the whole family and this is what we’re tyring to achieve–black type.” Financial Recovery returned $12.50, $6.20 and $3.80 as the third choice. Greek Justice ($19.00, $12.00) at 27-1 contributed to a juicy 1-7 exacta worth $192.00 and a 1-7-6 trifecta with Listenllindalisten was worth $2,722.40. The $1 1-7-6-10 trifecta with Ellan Vannin returned $6,846.35. Share This:Share
