Inside Track for October 11-13

A look at some of the top highlights from the past long weekend of racing at Woodbine.

Clement’s Fashion statement

Les Reys (FR) bested stablemate Gal in a Rush to lead a Miguel Clement-trained one-two finish in Saturday’s $150,000 Ontario Fashion Stakes presented by Tanqueray (G3), at Woodbine.

Sent off at 4-1, the well-travelled 4-year-old roan exercised great patience while waiting for a lane to open, and when that opportunity came as the field straightened for home, she didn’t miss her shot.

With enough burst to ward off 3-2 choice Gal in a Rush, Les Reys earned her first graded stakes victory in her fifth start on North American soil.

Bred in France by Athanase Poulopoulos and Haras du Hoguenet, Les Reys paid $10.30 for the Ontario Fashion win.

Out of this world

Rookie upstart gelding Jupiter rocketed down the lane in Sunday afternoon’s $125,000 Display to claim his first stakes score in dramatic fashion.

Working under the steady hand of rider Fraser Aebly, the 2-year-old dark bay found himself locked in a spirited race for home with rivals Navy Street (5-1) and Baaeed Alynna (5-1).

Ultimately, it was Jupiter who reigned supreme by a half-length over runner-up Navy Street, and Baaeed Alynna, who finished third.

Bred in Kentucky by David Schwartz and owned by D.J. Stable LLC, Jupiter, as the 4-5 favourite, paid $3.80.

Piper’s Gift presents connections with stakes score

Piper’s Gift wrapped up her first career stakes score in style on Sunday, taking the $125,000 Glorious Song by 5 ½ lengths under rider Rafael Hernandez.

Making her fourth career start, the 2-year-old Dale Desruisseaux-trained Bay looked like a seasoned veteran, allowing the race to develop before taking control in the upper stretch and watching her lead balloon.

Now a stakes winner, Piper’s Gift has put together an impressive rookie campaign at 2-1-0 with nearly $120,000 in prizes for breeder/owner Chiefswood Stables Limited.

As the 6-5 choice Sunday at Woodbine, Piper’s Gift paid $4.70.
