James ‘Mort’ Hardy passes

May 15, 2018

TORONTO, May 15, 2018 – Veteran owner-trainer James ‘Mort’ Hardy passed away last week at the age of 91.

The popular horseman was the conditioner of Proud Lou who after winning the Natalma Stakes at Woodbine shipped to New York to capture the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park, in 1981. His graded stakes winning trainees included Anglian Prince, who took the Grade 3 Marine Stakes in 2002, and Mysterious Affair who was victorious in the 2001 running of the Grade 3 George C. Hendrie Handicap, both at Woodbine.

While Hardy’s last win as a trainer came on June 16, 2015 when Rocky Ruckus crossed the wire first at Fort Erie Racetrack, the celebrated horseman also enjoyed three wins last season at Woodbine as an owner including a victory with Sky Vision, trained by his longtime friend Conrad Belaire, on September 16, 2017.

Please join Woodbine in offering condolences to the family and friends of James ‘Mort’ Hardy.
