Win-win situation

Chasing Bourbon ($4.70) and Vandoo ($2.50) dead-heated for top spot in Saturday’s fifth race. It was the first race for the 2-year-olds, who covered five furlongs on the Tapeta in :59.37. Krista Cole-Simpson trains Chasing Bourbon, a son of Old Forester, and Kevin Attard trains Vandoo, a son of Souper Speedy.

A treasured first

Michelle Love recorded her first stakes win as a trainer and owner when Foolish Games took Sunday’s $100,000 Thunder Bay Stakes. It was also the first stakes victory for co-owners Mentec Mississauga Industrial Equipment Ltd. and Big Willow Stables. Omar Moreno rode the daughter of Reload-Jungle Jewel to a 1 ¼-length victory in the Ontario Sire Heritage Series race.

Dazzling debut

Fourfiftyfour, trained and owned by Barbara Minshall, lit up to the tote board in Saturday’s sixth race. Under Ryan Munger, the daughter of Perfect Timber held off War Painter for the victory and paid $57.80 for the win. The final time for six furlongs on the Tapeta was 1:10.75.

Dodging his rivals

Patches O’Houlihan, named after a character in the movie Dodgeball, won his fourth straight race after taking Sunday’s $100,000 Lake Superior Stakes. Bred and owned by Frank Di Giulio, Jr., the sprint star bested his closest rival by 8 ½ lengths. The son of Reload was ridden by Daisuke Fukumoto and is trained by Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Robert Tiller.

Worth Watching

Direct Drive, under Declan Carroll, dominated race four on Sunday, winning the 1 1/16-mile inner turf course tilt by 5 ¼ lengths as the 4-5 choice.

Worth Repeating

John Sikura, of Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms, was ecstatic after Tyson outslugged his rivals to win the $175,000 Seagram Cup (G2) on Saturday.

“It looks like he’s going to be a champion. I love Canada and I love Woodbine. It’s great to be here, particularly when you win.”

Worth Knowing

The $150,000 Vice Regent Stakes highlights Saturday’s racing card. On Sunday, the $100,000 Hamilton Stakes steps into the spotlight. Both races will be run on Woodbine’s inner turf.
