Yorkton gives da Silva Plate Day triple in Charlie Barley

July 2, 2017

TORONTO, July 2—Yorkton capped a terrific day for Eurico Rosa Da Silva, winning the Charlie Barley by a neck to give the jockey his third stakes win on the program.

The Charlie Barley, an open one-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds, offered a purse of $119,000 which included a $12,000 Ontario-bred bonus for the winner.
“All I wanted was him to relax a little bit and he relaxed a little bit for me,” said Rosa Da Silva, who had convinced Yorkton to reverse the front-running style which the colt had employed successfully on the Tapeta in the seven-furlong Queenston Stakes last time out.
Flowmotion shot to the lead in the Charlie Barley and stayed there through an opening quarter in :23.31, a half in :47.17, and three-quarters in 1:11.62
“I put him a little behind another horse. He was just relaxed but In the stretch.” Said Da Silva, who had had won the Grade 3 Singspiel with Aldous Snow and was a dead-heat winner while riding Starship Jubilee earlier on the Queen’s Plate Day program. “ I just turned him loose and he ran great.”
Escondera and City Boy forced the issue with Conquest Lemonraid and Yorkton waiting in the wings. Woodbridge made a big move to range up in second in early stretch but by now Yorkton had joined the fray.
The Stu Simon-trained homebred, owned by Chiefswood Stable, led by a head with a furlong to run and was game in holding off Conquest Lemonraid, who had launched his rally from just farther back.
“He has always been really talented,” said Simon. “He has been very forward so we’ve been trying to work with him, trying to get him to settle, and it looks like the work has been paying off.”
Conquest Lemonraid took the place by 3/4-lengths over Woodbridge, who flattened out slightly in the drive.
Invader Made You Look, the 6-5 favorite, was an even fourth with Flowmotion,Gamble’s Citizen, City Boy, Escondera and Minister’s Strike completing the order of finish.
Yorkton returned $9.10, $5.30 and $3.60 as the second choice and topped an 8-3 exacta with Conquest Lemonraid ($6.30, $4.10) worth $77.50. The 8-3-7 trifecta with Woodbridge ($8) paid $591.50 and the 8-3-7-2 superfecta ending with Made You Look was worth $915.20 for $1.
